Job Description Summary
As part of the Wellbeing and Accessibility Services team, provides counselling services for UBCO students who are seeking personal counselling. This position will help address the counselling needs of the international student population. The incumbent will provide high quality intake and assessments and short term interventions for students. Where indicated, the incumbent will refer students to other members of Wellbeing and Accessibility Services and to appropriate university and community resources. The incumbent will collaborate with other members of the university to provide consultation and education about managing students in distress. The incumbent will also participate in the overall design and delivery of Wellbeing and Accessibility services.
Organizational Status
Reports to the Manager, Counselling Services. Works cooperatively as a member of a multi-disciplinary team of professionals, actively participating in and contributing to the development and implementation of effective and efficient Wellbeing and Accessibility services with a focus on counselling. Works in collaboration with staff in other areas of Student Services, faculties and University departments, and student organizations, and also collaborates with off campus health and social service providers.

Consequence of Error/Judgement
Must be able to act with a considerable degree of autonomy and independence in the provision of assistance to students, while adhering to the ethical standards of the profession. Poor professional judgment or unethical practice by the counsellor could be extremely detrimental to the clients wellbeing and create situations of legal liability for the University.
Supervision Received
Acts independently within established clinical and ethical guidelines. Works within a model of collegial consultation and collaboration, under the direction of the Manager, Counselling Services.
Supervision Given
Supervises practicum students as well as students involved in peer programs, work-study programs, assistant positions and/or volunteer assignments.
Preferred Qualifications
Master s degree in Counselling Psychology or a related field. Certification as a Registered Clinical Counsellor with the B.C. Association of Clinical Counsellors. Minimum of five years experience in Clinical Counselling. Experience supervising Master s level practicum students preferred. Demonstrated experience providing advice and guidance to international students. Demonstrated experience working with a young adult population in providing assessment and treatment of individuals presenting with a range of emotional and psychiatric disorders. Demonstrated knowledge of student development theory and experience in program development, evaluation, consultation and outreach. Demonstrated ability to maintain effective working relationships with a wide range of students, faculty, and staff. Ability to work effectively with a team. Appropriate theory and training in individual and group counselling, brief therapies, crisis response, youth development, diversity, health promotion/prevention, community development, community education and/or advocacy. Demonstrated experience and commitment to serving the needs of a broadly diverse student population within a university campus community.
