Job Summary
The Research Officer is responsible for managing and facilitating external research grant approval and collaborative research agreement processes. It is responsible for all pre- and post-award activities. The incumbent must have a detailed knowledge of granting agency, UBC and affiliated hospitals’ policies and procedures. This position is not routine and the Research Officer must exercise initiative and judgment while employing tact and discretion to handle issues and complete tasks. It is the Research Officer’s responsibility to ensure that applications put forward for funding comply with the policies, procedures. This position is the key business position within the grants team to advise and plan RISe and Workday process and functionality improvements through to implementation.
Organizational Status
Reports to the Research Manager, Office of Research Services (ORS). Communicates regularly with UBC researchers to provide information on funding agencies and the relevant UBC grant processes. Works closely with Research Finance, UILO, ISC, RISe and IT teams and researchers and administrators from all Faculties, Departments, Affiliated Hospitals and Schools at all UBC campuses.
Work Performed
Consequence of Error/Judgement
Non-compliance with contractual terms and/or sponsoring agency guidelines could result in the return of agency funds, loss of future funds, and/or inability to collect funds owed to UBC. Incorrect interpretation of Sponsoring Agency and UBC policies provided to faculty will result in non-compliance with the sponsoring agency terms on the use of funds. Errors in the establishment of cost centres, research accounts and budgets in FMS could create significant financial liability for UBC.
Supervision Received
Reports to the Research Manager, ORS. Follows administrative policies and procedures to establish priorities in accomplishing job duties. Receives instructions for unusual problems, but works independently to balance workflow and provide efficient and effective support.
Supervision Given
May assist in the supervision of clerical positions as well as work study students when required.
Minimum Qualifications
For research work, a post-graduate degree or equivalent professional designation with a minimum of four years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Otherwise, an undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline is required with a minimum of six years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Related senior level administrative experience in a university or health care environment preferred. Ability to provide authoritative information and supervise students.
