The Department of Athletic Therapy in the Faculty of Kinesiology is currently seeking a Full-time Regular Assistant Althetic Therapist.
Located in the Faculty of Kinesiology Varsity Athletic Therapy assists athletes in the Dinos Athletics program with injury prevention, emergency assistance and follow up therapy where applicable.
The Assistant Athletic Therapist reports to the Associate Athletic Director but is directly supervised by the Head Athletic Therapist. They will be required to use their judgment and discretionary decision-making skills regarding athlete injury assessment, management, rehabilitation, and readiness to return to sport which will impact student athletes, coaches, and the athletic program in which each athlete participates. They are responsible to maintain effective communication and interpersonal relationships in a multidisciplinary setting, including the coaches, students, the Sport Medicine Center physicians, physiotherapists, nurses, and staff. They assist with the supervision of athletic therapy students as a practicum supervisor for the Mount Royal University Athletic Therapy Program. The Athletic Therapy group in association with varsity athletics also operates a community-based field athletic therapy service known as Sport Therapy Service (STS). Assistant Athletic Therapists may be assigned certain duties associated with the day to day working of this fee for service business
Regular hours are split between field, clinical and administrative settings. This position has seasonal work demands, with non-traditional workday hours associated between the months of August to April. The job will demand availability on weekends for field and event coverage. There is high stress related to being first responder to injury situations.
Provides clinical athletic therapy services to varsity student athletes and is responsible for the clinical supervision and leadership of the Athletic Therapy students that help provide clinical athletic therapy care to varsity athletes. Works clinically 4 – 5 hours a day between the hours of 7am to 6pm. Responsible for setting up injury response procedures at field venues as designated by the Head Athletic Therapist and must be prepared to travel with their designated teams as necessary. Is responsible for the safe and proper use of therapeutic modalities used in the Sport Medicine Centre.
Position Description
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
Clinical / Field:
Responsible for field coverage and supervision of students in the care of one collision sport team and/or home game coverage of court sport activities as designated by the supervisor
Respond to injuries during games or practices for designated Varsity team. Independently assess the injuries, design and oversee an appropriate rehabilitation program for the athlete to safely return to play.
Supervise athletic therapy students in their athletic therapy practice, determine when they are unqualified and assume responsibility for the injury and scene.
Determine the appropriate and safe return to play guidelines for athletes under their care.
Determine if physician consultation is necessary.
Carry out and/or supervise athletic therapy students with taping and performance preparation for designated sport practices and games.
Upon arrival at field or court event, determine appropriate emergency response action plan and perform a facility safety check, assuring safe playing conditions.
Act as Head Athletic Therapist at all games and practices of designated sports and events.
Make use of various computer on-line testing and screening tools
Administrative
Daily charting and monitoring of athletic injuries
Provide effective service as assigned by supervisor
Regularly review emergency response action plans and make recommendations for changes if necessary.
Prepare weekly and session reports on student therapists they supervise for their academic requirements.
Act as designate of Head Athletic Therapist in their absence.
Be responsible for a portion of the budget assigned to you by the Head Athletic Therapist.
Be familiar with CCES and Canada West policy and procedures.
Work in association with University offices such as; Risk Management, Supply Chain management, HR and IT
Assist with marking and administration associated with Supervising MRU Athletic Therapy Practicum Students.
Miscellaneous duties as assigned by the Head Athletic Therapist such as student scheduling, budgeting, and unforeseen varsity commitments.
Communication
Communicate effectively with coaches, athletes, and other therapists regarding injured players, management strategies and a safe return to participation.
Attend weekly and monthly meetings as defined by the Head Athletic Therapist to share information and discuss any problems or concerns that may arise.
Qualifications / Requirements:
Certified Athletic Therapist in good standing with the Canadian Athletic Therapy Association (CATA)
Bachelor of Kinesiology or related degree
Current First – Aid and CPR certification, as well as current certification in Sport First Responder or EMR
Minimum of five years of experience as an assistant, associate, or head athletic therapist, in a college or University setting, or within a professional sport organization
Eligible for professional liability insurance
Experience working with University caliber football or hockey is a definite asset
