Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc (TteS) is a fast-growing vibrant organization committed to the development and progress of its Band Members and Community. As such, the TteS invites applications from qualified, highly motivated and dynamic individuals to fill the following position.

Purpose Of Position

This position is responsible for the overall development, implementation and coordination of providing programs and services for Learning on the Land for the Tk̓emlúps te Secwépemc community members. the candidate will teach the language on field trips with band members for On the Land Learning activities, such as, but not limited to, hunting, fishing, harvesting, and teaching the legends that correspond to landmarks, The candidate must have the passion and commitment to ensure the perpetuation, promotion and revitalization of Secwepemctsín is implemented through the 2023 Language and Culture Strategic. The candidate will help to increase the number of TteS speakers by teaching culture through Learning on the Land Programs and Services.

Duties And Responsibilities

Overseeing the coordination, facilitation, creation, and implementation of language educational programs as identified by the Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc (TteS) for Secwepemctsín, with a focus on the dialect of the TteS. (95%)

Strategic Leadership

• Establish and maintain excellent rapport with colleagues and clients.
• Promote the 2023 L&C strategic plan so we may revitalize our Language, History and Culture
• Uphold the Shuswap Nation Declaration to work in unity to preserve, record, enhance and perpetuate our Secwépemc language, history and culture.
• Provide sound leadership in the planning, development and coordination of year-round On the Land programs and Services, such as hunting, fishing, harvesting, storytelling, singing, dancing.
• Host workshops on cultural activities, such as, basket making, caring for eagle feathers, hide tanning, traditional regalia and jewelry making.
• Foster team spirit for staff and community members while doing On the Land Programs and Services
• Promotes and enhances the integrity of the Western Dialect of the Secwepemctsin and ensure that staff and members are given priority in participating in the On the Land programs and services.

Community Relations And Outreach Activities

• Initiate On the Land Learning Programs and Services to attract TteS language learners.
• Help to increase the number of Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc language learners and fluent speakers of all ages by teaching the language while leading On the Land programs and services.
• Participate in inter-community communication by identifying language champions and building rapport with local elders, fluent speakers, traditional knowledge holders, and cultural experts.
• Participate in TteS Opening Ceremonies and Welcoming for internal and external community partnerships and stakeholders.
• Work closely with and collaborate with on-site elders.
• Assist with special projects as required.

Educating The Public

• Mobilize the community goal of returning Secwepemctsín to everyday use and intergenerational transmission by teaching the language while hosting On the Land programs and service.
• Assist with gathering information to update the Language Status Assessment for the TteS community.
• Responsible for providing written and verbal reports, including an annual report.
• Perform all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the TteS policies, standards, and procedures, and as directed by the Language Coordinator and Language & Culture Department Manager.
• Maintain confidentiality on all matters relating to the affairs of the Language & Culture Department and TteS.

Professional Certification, Education And Experience

• Bachelor’s Degree in a First Nations Language or a degree in related field is an asset.
• SFU Language Proficiency Certificate
• Must be willing to continually upgrade knowledge, skills and abilities.
• Must pass Criminal Record Check – Vulnerable Sector.
• Must have a current valid BC Driver’s License and reliable transportation.
• Class 4 driver’s license an asset
• Level 3 first aid an asset
• PAL is an asset.

Skills And Abilities

• Must be passionate and dedicated to the enhancement, perpetuation and revitalization of the Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc dialect of the Secwépemc Language.
• Demonstrated ability to coordinate and manage concurrent activities, keeping staff and colleagues informed.
• Communicate effectively with an audience.
• Good oral and written communication skills in Secwepemctsín and English.
• Strong analytical, organizational, coordination and planning skills.
• Proven ability to set priorities and meet deadlines.
• Extensive knowledge of Secwépemc culture, history, and lifestyle is required.
• Extensive knowledge of proper Secwépemc protocols when interacting with Elders, Fluent Speakers and Traditional Knowledge Keepers.
• Expert in hunting, fishing, harvesting, storytelling,
• Ability to teach Secwepemc songs and dances.
• Ability to work independently.
• Strong tact and diplomacy.
• Must have strong teamwork and cooperation, service orientation and problem solving and judgement skills.
• Ability to work in multi-cultural settings.
• Travel is a requirement.

HOURS OF WORK: Normal Day shifts – 7 hours. Non-normal shifts may be required.

PAY GRADE: Starting at $25.98-$28.70 depending on education & experience.
