General Accountability
Provides expertise in relation to engineering work associated with a variety of electrical engineering duties related to the maintenance of TTC’s subway/SRT vehicle fleet and associated electrical and electronic equipment; takes professional responsibility for engineering work as required by the Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEO).
Key Job Functions
Prepare complete technical specifications, reports and detailed design drawings relating to electrical components of TTC’s subway/SRT vehicle fleet and associated equipment
Conduct comprehensive testing programs to ensure subway/SRT vehicles and components are operating at prescribed specification levels
Investigate, diagnose, and perform failure analyses of complex electrical engineering problems and troubleshooting to locate electrical malfunctions and faults; recommend alternate design, procedures, equipment, materials and related matters
Provide technical recommendations and opinions on electrical engineering problems, tests, specifications and related matters
Coordinate, direct and guide relevant TTC staff and/or consultants, contractors, suppliers and manufacturers in section specific design work, equipment or systems; resolve design issues to ensure compliance with TTC design standards and specifications
Review technical proposals and quotations from consultants for compliance with TTC requirements, evaluate tenders, recommend for award and monitor progress
Provide technical support and engineering guidance to relevant staff on a 24-hour basis as required
Demonstrates behaviours that support diversity, inclusion, and a respectful work and service environment that is free from discrimination and harassment. Education and Experience
Completion of a university degree in a related discipline or a combination of education, training and experience deemed to be equivalent, combined with directly related electrical engineering experience
Registration as a Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario (PEO) is mandatory
University degree in Electrical Engineering preferred
Additional Requirements
Sound knowledge of electrical engineering principles, methods and practices with specific knowledge in the areas of drafting, AC/DC motors and generators, microprocessors, and electronic controls
Expertise in the use of diagnostic instrumentation, sensors, transducers, dataloggers, chart recorders and data analysis
Basic understanding of mechanics, hydraulics and pneumatics
Effective interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
Sound judgement supported by well-developed technical, analytical, problem-solving and technical writing skills
Proficient in the use of computers with good working knowledge of applications related to the work, such as CADD, Excel, Power Point, databases, etc.
Must have the ability to quickly become familiar with the TTC subway/SRT vehicle fleet and associated electrical and electronic equipment, as well as the various functions carried out by the Rail Cars and Shops department
