The Nurse Practitioner, Acute Pain Services will function within the scope outlined by the College of Nurses of Ontario. They will demonstrate a high level of autonomy in clinical decision making, assessments and treatments related to the acute and complex pain problems. This role will require the NP to function within the interprofessional Acute Pain (inpatient) and Transitional Pain Services (outpatient) (APS/TPS). The NP will help to identify holistic care needs and collaborate with care providers external to the department of Anesthesia to ensure pain is appropriately managed, including the identification of an outpatient follow up plan in the community or referral to a UHN Pain Program. Additionally, the NP will help to identify systems and prevent inappropriate opioid medication use and help transition to opioid agonist (buprenorphine/naloxone) treatment in collaboration with the pain team. The NP will also contribute to nursing education, policy and procedure development, research activities, and act as a resource and serve as a consultant to individuals and groups within the professional community. Previous work in the pain/addiction medicine space would be an asset to this role but is not an expectation. These contributions will reflect the expected role of an Advanced Practice Nurse.
