Working for the School of Dentistry
The School of Dentistry has been at the University of Alberta since 1917 and is part of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry and the College of Health Sciences. The school serves an integral role in educating a part of the healthcare workforce in Alberta and beyond. The school offers undergraduate programs in Dentistry, Dental Hygiene and Dental Assisting. We offer graduate programs in Dentistry, Dental Hygiene, Oral Biology, Oral Medicine, Orthodontics and Periodontology.
There are 24 Faculty, 42 Academic Teaching Staff (ATS), and over 200 Excluded Academic staff, that are supported by the Student & Academic Services unit. Our Mission: Improving the health of the people of Alberta and beyond through leadership in oral/maxillofacial health care, education, research/scholarship and providing service that is responsive to social need.
Position
Reporting to the Manager, Curriculum and Programs, this position will play a key role in supporting the learner experience within the School of Dentistry. The Learner Advocacy, Wellbeing and Engagement Coordinator (LAWEC) is responsible for responding to and triaging learner-related situations that have the potential to adversely impact learner success and experience. Under the direction of the Associate Chair, Student Affairs, the incumbent will coordinate the response to learners in varying degrees of distress which may impact their academic and personal pursuits. This position will directly support the Associate Chair, Student Affairs and faculty program-specific advisors in their roles. The LAWEC delivers events and programming for incoming and continuing SoD learners to create meaningful experiences as they transition in and through their programs. Working collaboratively with academic programs and Student Academic Services the incumbent is responsible for leading orientation planning and activities for incoming learners and continuing learners. They will also organize additional learner engagement events and activities throughout the year in collaboration with the various programs (e.g. Day of Dentistry, White Coat ceremony, Pinning Ceremony, graduation activities). In all facets of this role, this position endeavors to integrate and advance the University’s commitments to equity, diversity, and inclusivity.
