University of Calgary Looking for Academic Strategist, Student and Enrolment Services at Calgary, Alberta, Canada Full Time

The Student Success Centre in Student and Enrolment Services is currently seeking a Full-time Temporary Relief Academic Strategist for approximately 24 months.

This position reports to the Manager, Learning Support Programs, Student Success Centre. The Academic Strategist will provide academic and developmental advising to the various cohorts of students served by the Student Success Centre. This position will dedicate 50% of their time to supporting Dinos Athletics students. Providing instruction in a variety of formats, including one to one sessions, and small group sessions, the Academic Strategist will work with students seeking academic support across the university to assist them in developing learning strategies, academic goals and decision-making skills. In addition to direct contact with students, this position liaises with other academic support services on campus to promote the academic success of students.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities:

Advising 1:1

• Promote students’ effective use of academic strategies by modeling and teaching a variety of study strategies in both individual and small group settings.
• Assist students in identifying barriers to academic success and work proactively to help academically at-risk students improve academic and study skills.
• Work with students to set goals and develop action plans for academic success. Monitor student progress towards achieving individual goals and adjust teaching strategies as required to promote student success.
• Liaise with the Wellness Centre and other support services staff to ensure sound process and timely referrals.
• Maintain student files according to protocol and ensure files are updated in a timely, thorough and ethical manner.
• Adhere to FOIP regulations in student interactions and as they apply to student and University records.

Workshop Development and Facilitation

• Develop and facilitate group sessions for students on topics related to academic success, goal setting and decision-making as needed.

Administrative and Professional Development

• Ensure appropriate and accurate records of teaching sessions and appointments are kept for each student and small group interaction.
• Participate in team training and professional development

Qualifications / Requirements:

• Master’s degree in student affairs or a related field and /or experience working within a post-secondary or related setting an asset. A combination of education and work experience may also be considered;
• Experience supporting student athletes, with a developed understanding of the needs of this population.
• Strong working knowledge of post-secondary student experience and needs across various students’ intersectional identities;
• 2-3 years of experience providing academic support to post-secondary students experiencing academic challenge in a one-on-one context
• 2-3 years of experience teaching or facilitating academic support programming, workshops and/or courses in a student service unit or in a post-secondary environment
• Training in mental health and suicide prevention required.
• Ability to conceptualize, design and implement individual and small group learning sessions
• Familiarity and experience with facilitating academic skill development in a university environment
• Proven ability to handle successfully a large, intense caseload (up to 25 student appointments per week) with a positive student-centric attitude
• Strong critical thinking, judgment and decision making skills
• Ability to work under pressure to meet strict and multiple timelines
• Demonstrated ability to be resourceful, creative, innovative, and flexible
• Ability to work effectively individually and as a team member
• Experience using technical advising tools (such as student information management systems like People Soft or Banner, THRIVE, Degree Audit software and Microsoft Office)
• Understanding of procedures to safe guard confidential student information and requirements for confidentiality as outlined in both the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIP)
