Hart House is a centre for experiential education outside the classroom at the University of Toronto. Since it opened in 1919, Hart House functions as a place where students, faculty, staff, alumni and membersof the broader community connect with each other and the world. Hart House operates from a historic facility on the St. George campus, as well as a 150-acre farm in Caledon, Ontario, offering a wide range of services through a social enterprise model that generates revenue to support its student-focused programming on all three University of Toronto campuses.

The Integrative Arts Education programming at Hart House is a key contributor to an inclusive, curious, and welcoming campus environment, and is delivered in coordination andcollaboration with internal, campus and community partners. We work with others to create initiatives that invite the next generation of creators to propel their ideas into action from the personal to the global, through innovative and experiential learning opportunities.

We work from a social enterprise model in partnership with students and community in co-creating experiential learning opportunities as participants, planners, volunteers, and in paid positions. We work with staff, faculty, students and community partners to co-create events and activities on all 3 campuses of the University of Toronto.

Programs are designed to connect participants to their creativity and interests, build community on and off campus, and create a sense of belonging and engagement that is connected to and goes beyond the classroom.

Your opportunity:
Under guidance of the Manager, the incumbent will be responsible for creating and managing dynamic arts education programming initiatives at Hart House that are focused on experiential learning for students, and that bring an Indigenous lens to artistic practice and cultural expression.

A priority element of the role will be to centre Indigenous perspectives in arts education that engages both Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities, and to deepen diversity,representation, equity and inclusivity, through innovative program that develop and support community engagement.

These programs intersect with Hart House programs in dialogue and wellness, and will involve an array of partnered collaborative initiatives, including some focused program initiatives with the U of T Art Museum.

Programs also include those that facilitate forms of creative expression linked to land-based learning. They also include visual arts engagements that explore pertinent social issues through the Hart House Stories and Talking Walls programs, and contribute to student mental well-being and community-building through Get Crafty and specific Creative LifeSchool workshops.

A key part of the incumbent’s role is to serve as staff advisor to student leaders on the Hart House Student Arts Committee in delivering their annual programs, and support to registered club programming in visual arts, such as film and/or photography. Additionally, this role will be responsible for developing and delivering hands-on arts-based activities aimed at engaging a broad audience on regular basis in a variety of contexts.

The incumbent will develop and deliver programs and events and engaging all three campuses of the University and the broader community; facilitate student-led programming, oversee implementation and assessment; and will develop/maintain strategic partnerships/collaborations with students, student groups, academic divisions (faculty), student life professionals, alumni, and community groups.

A priority: initiatives that engage Indigenous, Black and Racialized students, graduate students, international students and other key groups as identified; deepen diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives tri-campus through innovative programs based on dialogue practices; develop and support community engagement opportunities linked to key initiatives; develop, implement and review meaningful programme support materials and activities and processes, for example, training for student volunteers, co-curricular record support; act in an advisory/facilitator capacity within the Hart House student-led Club & Committee (C&C) governance structure and strategic program initiatives; advise and coach Hart HouseStudent Groups and Hart House involved students on co-curricular activities.

Through these initiatives and others, Hart House builds connections between the University and the community, and provides unique platforms to amplify stories and voices of students and community members, especially those from underrepresented and marginalized groups. Working from an equity framework, the Coordinator will use their considerable creative powers to build an inclusive and welcoming environment that emboldens creativity, cultivates compassion, and generates growth.

Your responsibilities will include:
Planning and implementing components of curricular and/or co-curricular programs and activities

Developing and implementing community engagement strategies and plans

Planning and overseeing the implementation of an evaluation framework for programs and initiatives

Promoting programs and service offerings to internal and/or external contacts

Facilitating educational workshops and seminars

Developing strategies that maximize outreach to students

Coordinating tasks for projects and other strategic initiatives with stakeholders

Developing content for marketing and/or promotional materials

Essential Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree or an acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience.

Minimum four years recent related experience in an experiential learning environment, with an emphasis on project and program development, design, management, implementation and assessment preferably within a post-secondary institution or the non-profit sector in a social justice organization or arts-based organization.

Demonstrated experience working with anti-racist and intercultural frameworks.

Experience working within Indigenous communities with strong knowledge of Indigenous worldviews, culture and values. Highly knowledgeable about the legacy and ongoing impacts of colonialism and have the ability to apply the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada Final Report and Calls for Action within an educational context. Highly knowledgeable of cultural protocols to appropriately engage and foster respectful, reciprocal, ongoing relationships with local Elders, Knowledge Keepers, internal/external Indigenous communities.

Demonstrated experience working with arts, dialogue and social justice-based programming. Experience in exhibition design.

Experience with arts-based methods in working with students and the broader community.

Experience working with community partners and cultivating community partnerships.

Experience with group facilitation, especially using hands-on, arts-based methods.

Knowledge and experience supervising, engaging and mentoring student staff and youth volunteers in a leadership context. Experience leading collaborative teams.

Experience facilitating hands-on arts-based activities for a broad audience.

Experience using social media tools as a method of engagement for youth.

Excellent planning and project management skills.

Computer skills: Microsoft 365, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook.

Excellent oral and written communication, leadership, organizational and interpersonal skills.

Proven knowledge of experiential learning models, pedagogy and andragogy.

Ability to exercise initiative, creativity, and attention to detail.

Ability to exercise patience, and to demonstrate tact, judgment and discretion.

Demonstrated ability to relate to students in a supportive and motivating way.

Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment in a busy, deadline oriented workplace.

Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a highly diverse University community and to organize, motivate and work constructively and cooperatively with a variety of campus and community groups.

Awareness of campus systems and organizations, and the University’s policies and procedures as they relate to student life.

Assets (Nonessential):
Knowledge of the University ofToronto strongly preferred.

Arts background preferred.

Pay Scale Group & Hiring Zone:
USW Pay Band 12 – $71,131 with an annual step progression to a maximum of $90,965. Pay scale and job class assignment is subject to determination pursuant to the Job Evaluation/Pay Equity Maintenance Protocol.
