Description:
Course number and title: CTL7008H – Introduction to Special Education and Mental Health
Course description: In Ontario, the regular education classrooms are currently the placement of choice for students with disabilities. This movement toward inclusive education has occurred for a variety of reasons: legal, educational, moral and philosophical. In this course, teacher candidates will consider special education from the perspective of the regular classroom teacher. From this perspective, special education is not ”special” but is effective teaching that benefits all the students in the class. It focuses on adapting instruction to meet the diverse needs of the students in the class. The course will concentrate on how instructional assessment can be used to calibrate instruction to meet the needs of individual students, how to accommodate learner differences and how to collaborate with other professionals to meet the provincial requirements for inclusion of students in teaching, programming and assessment. This course is normally open only to students in the Master of Teaching program. Students may not take HDP2280.
