NOTICE OF TEMPORARY PART TIME VACANCY
(For approximately one year)
Non-Union Staff
POSITION TITLE: Academic Advisor
(Part Time – not to exceed 24 hours per week)
DEPARTMENT: Psychology
PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Academic Advisor provides advising and mentoring support to undergraduate students in the Department of Psychology, including those looking to change majors, international students, transfer students, part-time students, concurrent students, and mature students to ensure they are registered in appropriate courses and programs and to help students achieve academic success.
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:
The successful candidate will have:
· Bachelor’s degree
· Three (3) years’ experience in counselling, academic advising, or related field
· A thorough knowledge of programs and courses offered by the Department of Psychology
· Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of theory and/or best practices in student academic advising processes
· Practical knowledge of mentoring strategies in the academic environment
· Understanding of issues impacting successful student transition to University
· High level of cultural awareness and sensitivity
· Ability to liaise collaboratively and effectively with University faculty, appropriate administrative units, the Office of the Registrar, support staff, and student groups
· Good verbal and written communication skills
· Ability to work in team environment
· Ability to work with minimal supervision
· Proficient computer skills including the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
· A Master’s degree or higher is preferred
· A thorough knowledge of the University’s academic programs, policies, and procedures
