Our Pre-Kindergarten Program is designed to help prepare students and families for the transitions they will face in Kindergarten and guide them in setting a foundation for learning. Socially, the program aims to help students gain a sense of daily routines, adjust to interacting in a group setting, and develop their independence and self-help skills. Cognitively, children are provided with an environment that mirrors a play- and inquiry-based Kindergarten setting including: literacy and numeracy activities, and project-based science and art experiences. By supporting our students through open-ended activities, we are able to cater to the individual needs of each child ensuring that our students are prepared for the interdisciplinary explorations that lay ahead.
The Role
VMA is inviting applications for the full-time position of Registered Early Childhood Educator (RECE). This position is in a brand new Pre-Kindergarten classroom with 16 students as part of our Early Years expansion at the Franklin Horner Campus. You will be working alongside another RECE and can expect a third teacher to join the classroom team once enrollment expands to 24 students. The RECE will collaborate with their co-teachers to develop a stimulating and enriching program that is developed within the foundations of the Reggio-Emilia Approach.
To facilitate the development of the Program, you can expect 30 minutes of dedicated program time each day and 15 minutes of daily classroom preparatory time. In addition, 1:1 meetings with the Site Supervisor will be scheduled weekly to discuss your programming, listen to any classroom suggestions and offer feedback, or spent getting to know each other. As an RECE, you will attend a minimum of 2 paid professional development days a year, although VMA will support our educators who wish to further advance their learning by attending additional workshops, seminars and webinars during work hours.
What You’ll Do
- Ensure that all actions and activities meet the Child Care and Early Years Act (CCEYA) regulations and the City of Toronto’s Assessment for Quality Improvement (AQI)
- Collaborate with co-teachers on planning and implementing programs that are engaging, stimulating and appropriate for the age group. The program must follow the Early Learning for Every Child Today (ELECT) framework and be based on the interests of the students. The program will be developed using the Reggio-Emilia approach and meet the physical, cognitive, intellectual, social and emotional needs of the students.
- Create and maintain a learning environment where materials are purposeful and inspiring to students and free of clutter
- Document students’ activities and daily observations into their HiMama account on the classroom tablet.
- Direct, lead and collaborate with co-teachers to implement the Program and routine of the classroom. Responsible for ensuring all co-teachers are consistently following all requirements outlined in the AQI.
- Ensure availability for consultation with parents regarding students’ development. Communicate appropriate guidance, feedback and instruction to parents through meets, phone calls and written communications.
- Advise the Site Supervisor of pertinent information concerning students and their families
- Advocate for the policies, procedures and philosophy of VMA and support our mission, vision and values
- Maintain a healthy and safe environment that meets the requirements set forth by Toronto Children’s Services, Ministry of Education and VMA
- Assist students in washroom routines, dressing and meal/snack activities
- Follow all health guidelines specified by Toronto Public Health
- Model positive adult/child relationships
What You’ll Need
- A Degree or Diploma in Early Childhood Education, or equivalent. Preference will be given to applicants with a Degree.
- Registration to the College of Early Childhood Educators and in Good Standing
- Minimum of 2-3 years of experience as a lead RECE in a licensed childcare setting
- Minimum of 1 year of experience working with a group of 16-24 Pre-Kindergarten students in a licensed childcare setting
- Knowledge and application of the Reggio-Emilia approach in a licensed child-care setting is considered a strong asset
- Experience working with special needs children in a classroom setting is considered an asset
- Fundamental knowledge and application of the AQI, ELECT framework and How Does Learning Happen pedagogy
- Fully immunized with a Health Canada-recognized COVID-19 vaccine
- Excellent English language communication skills, both written and verbal
- Strong interpersonal skills with an emphasis on team building and demonstrated conflict resolution skills
- Current and clear Vulnerable Sector Check, or willing to receive one
- Standard First Aid/CPR C certification
- Available Monday-Friday between 7:30 am-6:00 pm
- Able to legally work in Canada
