Waste Connections is the premier provider of solid waste collection, transfer, recycling and disposal services, along with recycling and resource recovery, in mostly exclusive and secondary markets across the US and Canada. Canada has initiated the detailed engineering phase of a future renewable natural gas facility (“RNGF”) that will deliver pipeline-quality RNG within the Enbridge Gas Inc. franchise.
To enable a seamless transition from current operations up to the 2024 in-service commercial startup of the RNGF, the Ridge Landfill is creating a new full-time “RNG Plant Manager” position. The incumbent will support this transition at the site through on-site facility construction oversight as Owner representative and through the establishment and maintenance of cooperative working relationships with other site stakeholders. They will also oversee the operations of our renewable energy gas plant at a landfill site.
The RNG Plant Manager will manage the plant’s resources, responsible for optimizing plant performance, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, and leading a team of operators and technicians. The ideal candidate for this position will not only have a proven track record in terms of daily production managerial abilities but will also have demonstrated capabilities to work independently and within a team applying sound judgment and critical thinking skills.
Responsibilities:
Responsible for the operation and maintenance of landfill gas collection and control systems (GCCS) that supports a High BTU landfill gas plant. Includes the supervision and direction of technicians and contractors.
Monitor plant performance and optimize plant processes to maximize gas recovery and efficiency.
Oversee plant maintenance and repairs, including scheduling preventive maintenance and coordinating repairs with contractors.
Prepare regular reports on plant performance, including compliance with regulatory requirements.
Ensure the plant operates within budget and meets performance targets, including maximizing plant uptime and gas production.
Identify and implement opportunities to improve plant efficiency and profitability, including exploring new revenue streams.
Coordinate with landfill site management to ensure the plant operates in compliance with site regulations and best practices.
Manage inventory and procurement of plant supplies and materials, including negotiating contracts with suppliers.
Develop and implement plant policies and procedures, in line with regulatory requirements and best practices.
Develop and implement safety policies and procedures, ensuring a safe working environment for all plant staff.
Participate in in-house and third-party safety and environmental audits and implement recommendations and follow ups
Manage and direct the daily operations of the renewable energy gas plant, including overseeing plant staff and contractors.
Develop and maintain positive relationships with stakeholders, including site management, regulators, and local communities.
Stay within operating parameters set by Waste Connections and management notification procedures with respect to any production problems.
Cooperate with other site stakeholders and corporate leadership in achieving overall site goals in terms of safety, environment & health, facility performance and other corporate goal requirements.
Education and Experience:
Completion of a post-secondary college diploma or university degree in a related discipline (i.e. engineering, environmental science, energy, oil and gas, construction, chemical, industrial, gas processing) or combination of education, training and experience deemed to be equivalent.
Minimum of 3 years of experience in supervisory/management in a High-BTU gas facility, other processing or industrial setting.
3 to 5 years of experience managing operations and maintenance in an industrial setting is strongly recommended
A valid Ontario Driver’s License with access to own vehicle.
Skills:
Strong verbal, written, computer communication and organization skills. OR Excellent leadership, communication and problem-solving skills.
Strong knowledge of plant operations, maintenance and safety practices.
Knowledge of regulatory requirements related to landfill gas and renewable energy.
Experience performing mechanical maintenance on blowers, compressors, and equipment is desirable.
Experience with gas processing or similar systems, mechanical and electrical systems desirable.
Experience with computer-based monitoring systems; SCADA, SCS Etools web-based application, PLCs and programs; industrial maintenance programs (“IBM-Maximo”), Microsoft Word, Excel.
Experience planning, scheduling and directing plant maintenance outages.
Ability to manage multiple priorities and work effectively in a team environment.
Be available for ‘on call’ support, response or varied schedule needs.
Ability to travel to different districts/regions will be required.
