Job Overview
Reporting to the Manager, Specialty Lines as part of the Life Specialty Lines team, the Senior Group Underwriter, Specialty Lines prepares quotes, completes renewal reviews and enrolls new groups that are within the Group Special Risk block of business. Responsibility includes analyzing the acceptability of complex and high premium business within company guidelines by working collaboratively with our Sales Team, and providing value added expertise and service to both potential and existing policyholders, in response to quote enquiries, renewal ratings and requests for changes to insurance coverage.
Job Responsibilities
Review quotes for completeness and perform risk analysis using underwriting principles, technology and external data sources, for the purposes of quoting, negotiating and authorizing the acceptance of risk.
Analyze renewal data and determine eligibility for policy renewals based on guidelines and retention goals of the company.
Prepare renewal documents and distribute to Sales team.
Meet request for proposal and renewal deadlines by prioritizing workload.
Communicate decisions and respond to requests, including coverage details, coverage changes and renewal rating, in a prompt and professional manner.
Ensure efficient handling of work assignments, including calls.
Prepare and distribute Application documents to the Sales team and Group Operation to enroll new Group Special Risk clients.
Record and maintain a database of quote and renewal decisions made and maintain completeness of policy data.
Maintain an excellent understanding and knowledge of the Group Special Risk marketplace, products, brokerages, and competitors.
Act as a subject matter expert on Group Special Risk insurance policies, processes, regulations and audit.
Influence team members in a positive manner and provide short-term and long-term direction effectively working towards team goals.
Mentor and train less experienced team members.
Foster positive working relationships with internal and external parties, including networking at industry events.
Participate in periodic work reviews for quality assurance purposes.
Support the development and implementation of business change.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Post-secondary education or related business experience.
3 years of Group Special Risk insurance experience.
Completed or actively pursuing GBA or CEBS designation.
Advanced understanding of Group insurance principles.
Excellent attention to detail with the ability to review and analyze information carefully and comprehensively.
Strong mathematical, analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to identify, develop and implement appropriate solutions.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present information in a convincing manner.
Excellent interpersonal, customer service and conflict resolution skills.
Strong time management skills with the ability to handle changing priorities and fluctuating work volumes to meet deadlines.
Excellent decision-making skills with the ability to provide justification.
Ability to multi-task and monitor progress to meet deadlines.
Ability to adapt to change and perform effectively under pressure.
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
