Hybrid Role:
This is a hybrid position; you will be required to work at the WestJet Campus in Calgary approximately 2 days / week
Reporting to the , this role is responsible for coordinating and completing key month end duties to support Sunwing integration into WestJet’s financial statements and internal controls. The successful candidate will be responsible for Sunwing month end adjusting entries, preparing standalone financial statements and disclosures, and assisting with the assessment and design of internal controls over financial reporting. Researching accounting issues and providing specialized accounting guidance (IFRS) to stakeholders throughout WestJet will also be required.
Key deliverables include:
- Complete adjusting month-end entries for the accounting of leases under IFRS 16 and revenue under IFRS 15
- Complete adjusting entries for the accounting for end of lease return provisions
- Assess and perform any other adjusting entries required to align with WestJet accounting policies (accounting for APPR, breakage on vouchers etc.)
- Provide technical accounting guidance (IFRS) to Sunwing and ensure alignment with WestJet interpretation of accounting standards
- Prepare stand-alone Sunwing financial statements and note disclosures, as required
- Coordinate with the external auditors to provide required information for quarterly reviews and annual audits
- Conducting research and preparing analyses to understand emerging accounting pronouncements and their impact on Sunwing
- Reviewing supporting documentation required for the preparation of WestJet Group Inc’s notes to the financial statements, cash flow, and MD&A disclosures
- Complete risk assessments on new business units/functions and assist in the design and implementation of internal controls over financial reporting
- Align Sunwing corporate and finance policies with WestJet policies
Experience and qualifications:
- University Degree plus of relevant experience.
- Completion of an accounting designation (CPA, CA, CMA, CGA) is required.
- Strong technical accounting background in IFRS and experience with complex accounting issues.
- Attention to detail, organized and thorough, with a desire for continuous improvement.
- Ability to handle pressure and meet tight timelines in an environment with a high volume of activity.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with a wide variety of audiences.
- Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.
- Strong analytical, problem solving and organizational skills.
- A highly motivated and energetic individual with the ability to take responsibility for initiatives and produce results.
- JDE experience would be an asset.
- Previous airline or transportation industry experience would be an asset
