Newcomer Service Program
The Newcomer Service Program provides assistance to students and families who are new to the Winnipeg School Division, and in many cases, new to Canada. The program provides coordinated student assessments and supports for newcomer learners and their families. The program includes: Intercultural Support Workers (ISWs) who represent many communities and languages; access to interpreters and translation services; language acquisition and literacy centres; English as an Additional Language (EAL) programing; and supports for school staff. The purpose of the program is to improve social, cultural, emotional and academic outcomes for all newcomer learners and their families.
Under the supervision and direction of the Assistant Superintendent of Anti-Racism, Equity and Climate Justice, the Newcomer Service Coordinator is responsible for: supporting the delivery of Program services across the Winnipeg School Division; program planning and development; liaising with external agencies and organizations; providing guidance, leadership and support to staff; and performing other various duties within the scope of the Program.
