About this Role
The Coordinator of Outdoor Education is responsible for developing and leading Outdoor Education programming for students from Grade 1-10. This individual will inspire and empower young people to connect with themselves, others, and the environment. Adapting to COVID 19-related health and safety protocols, this person will design and supervise day, overnight, weekend and multi-day outdoor learning experiences throughout the year. Responsibilities will include the coordination of trip learning design and logistics, risk management, communication and the building of strong and trusting relationships with students, families, teachers, administration, and third-party providers. The Coordinator is responsible for implementing best practices and policies regarding risk management for Outdoor Education. This person is responsible for teaching the YHS signature GO! Program – a one year Outdoor Education course for a group of Grade 10 students. This person will continue to grow a cherished program at YHS.
Outdoor Education Responsibilities
Collaborate with the Director of the Senior School and Assistant Head of School to further develop and facilitate Outdoor Education for students (Grades 1-10)
Design and lead outdoor excursions with students (Grades 1-10) that inspire, connect students to each other, faculty, and the environment
Cultivate students’ curiosity, confidence, growth mindset, grit, leadership and well-being through a dynamic Outdoor Education program.
Cultivate students’ competencies related to wilderness skills, first aid, and preparedness, avalanche training, excursion preparation and implementation, risk assessment, BC environment, team-building, and leadership
Cultivate understanding, action, and reflection related to environmental sustainability
Develop a scope and sequence for Outdoor Education programming and measures for delivery on the quality of the program
Collaborate with teachers to deepen experiential and Outdoor Education learning
Coordinate with Directors of Junior School and Senior School as needed for excursions, along with training faculty to be lead guides or coordinators on trips
Develop and facilitate student experiential learning cycle and leadership training in support of the Outdoor Education Program
Develop, communicate, and implement clear and best practices of risk management
Communicate Outdoor Education Program information, risks, and learning with families
Profile the successes and benefits of the Program
Manage the use, repair, and on-going replacement of outdoor education equipment
Source third-party Guides and Service Provider possibilities for review pertaining to: 1. Risk Management, and 2.for review pertaining to: 1. Risk Management, and 2.Human Resources..
Participate in professional development opportunities to ensure that YHS remains at the forefront of outdoor and experiential education
Other Duties & Specific Tasks
Work overnight and weekend outdoor education trips as needed
Administer the Duke of Edinburgh Program at YHS
Provide support, education, and training to staff/faculty on Outdoor Education, and Safety and Emergency Preparedness related to Outdoor Education experiences
Prepare outdoor education excursion risk assessment and review with YHS Risk Team
Train and oversee the First Responder program at YHS
Serve as Teacher Advisor teacher if needed
Other duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
A passion for teaching and learning with children ages 6-18 & for the outdoors
Experience leading outdoor programs and wilderness excursions with students
Experience working in various Outdoor fields (i.e. kayak or ski guide)
Excellent organizational, communication, trust-building, and problem-solving skills
Experience in leading students in First Responders’, Wilderness First Aid, Avalanche Training
Competency in wide range of wilderness skills
Demonstrated leadership and organizational abilities with experience managing small to large outdoor education programs
Calm, diplomatic, thoughtful when dealing with challenges
Skilled in outdoor excursion emergency management
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and effectively with all stakeholders (students, parents, staff, faculty, administrators, third-party providers)
Sound judgment and decision-making skills
Highly developed abilities in the areas of: self-awareness, self-management, social agility, problem-solving, conflict resolution, and empathy

Qualifications
Bachelor of Education
BC Teachers Certificate
Outdoor Experiential Education courses or certification is required
Certifications in outdoor-related pursuits (i.e.kayaking, canoeing, avalanche, hiking) are strongly encouraged
Master’s in Education is an asset
BC Class 2 or 4 driver’s license is an asset
Current and advanced wilderness first aid certificate
5 years minimum of experience in outdoor education teaching is an asset
