Reporting to the the District Roads Supervisor, with technical direction from the Lead Operator, is responsible for carrying out the full range of duties of routine and specialized equipment operation; performs other duties required to ensure the York Region road system is maintained in a safe state of repair in compliance with operating standards; and operates specialized heavy duty Regional and rented equipment.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
Operates the full range of Regional and rented equipment associated with the repair and maintenance of the Regional road system including dumptrucks, loaders, tractors, chainsaws, grass cutting equipment and/or pavement marking equipment.
Performs measurable maintenance tasks using specialized, heavy road maintenance equipment, including motor graders, loaders, dump trucks, and road sweepers as a major component of the work assignment.
Provides traffic control (flagging), often in high traffic areas, on operational work sites and during emergency operation activities, in compliance with Occupational Health & Safety and Regulatory requirements.
Patrols roads within the assigned work area for potential hazards in response to winter operations.
Operates winter road maintenance equipment and applies de-icing or traction materials in compliance with Regional standards
Responds to inquiries from the public or contractors in accordance with Regional standards.
Performs other duties as assigned, that are in accordance with Branch and Departmental objectives.
QUALIFICATIONS
Successful completion of a Secondary School diploma or equivalent approved combination of education and experience.
Demonstrated experience in the field of specialized heavy duty equipment and other equipment associated with road maintenance operations such as dump trucks, loaders, tractors, snow plows using a Tandem or Single Axle Roadway plow/salter, chainsaws and grass-cutting equipment.
Knowledge of equipment vehicle operations as they relate to road maintenance activities.
Knowledge of road maintenance activities and procedures and of winter road maintenance operations.
Valid Ontario Class “DZ” driver’s licence.
Knowledge and demonstrated ability in corporate core competencies including communication, innovation, teamwork and collaboration, and personal ownership.
