Casual Labourer – Grounds & Material Services Department
Salary: $22.38/hour (+4% in lieu)
(+opportunities for higher starting wages for positions with the Grounds Department)
Hours: 7.5 hrs/day

The VSB Grounds, Material Services, and Maintenance Department are looking for casual labourers available for year-round and seasonal work assignments.
The Grounds Maintenance Department is concerned with the maintenance and construction of all school board facilities from the site buildings to the sidewalks. This includes all lawn and garden areas, sport fields, playgrounds, fencing, underground services and all asphalt areas. This constitutes year round support programs and includes seasonal extremes such as snow and excessive rainfall.
The Material Services Department administers an inventory of maintenance, operations, and general repair supplies for schools. In addition, Material Services is responsible for furniture repairs, loan of equipment, trucking and labour services.
The Maintenance & Construction Division carries out many preventive maintenance projects, including repair and large “overhaul” projects on school facilities to protect the infrastructure and to meet code requirements. These are scheduled on a pre-planned basis and schools are not required to request such work. Preventive maintenance includes re-roofing, re-painting, mechanical or electrical upgrade projects, annual fire alarm testing, and a periodic safety check on equipment in buildings and on grounds.
This position may be assigned to any VSB worksite under the auspices of Grounds Maintenance, Maintenance and Construction and/or Material Services. Employees may be required to move from site to site during the workday. The successful candidate will be required to work with minimal direct supervision in a team environment and maintain collegial working relationships. Staff are required to communicate with school principals, school staff and students to ensure minimal disruption to the learning environment. All employees are required to work safely in accordance with WorkSafe B.C. guidelines
Required Qualifications:
Completion of grade 12
Class 5 driver’s license is an asset
Landscaping experience and material handling an asset
Ability to meet the high physical demands of: exposure to a variety of weather conditions, vibration and noise, dust and flying particles, lifting and carrying heavy objects, physical coordination and exertion in a variety of postures, working in dirty and dusty environments, sustained postures for some tasks, working in confined spaces or at heights.
Examples of Duties:
Grounds Maintenance – assists truck drivers to load, unload and deliver a variety of materials and equipment; assists the Gardeners in ground maintenance, including weeding; cuts and trims grass; mixes and pours concrete; sets posts; constructs, maintains, repairs and lays our sports field and associated fixtures and equipment; erects, assembles, maintains, repairs and dismantles playground equipment; digs trenches, lays pipes; performs demolition work; breaks concrete, moves and removes sand.
Material Services – moves and stores boxes, furniture, equipment, and tools; arranges furniture as directed; assists truck drivers to load, unload and deliver a variety of materials and equipment; sets up and breaks down loan equipment and furniture; transports and carries material to work area.
Maintenance & Construction – assists journeymen in structural construction work; assists with delivering, handling and preparing job sites; performs demolition work; transports and carries material to work area; breaks concrete, move and removes sand.
