Durham College Looking for Student Success Coordinator at Oshawa, ON Full Time

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Student Success Coordinator (SSC) works in a team environment to support student development and engagement and a sense of belonging and connection for DC students through all phases of the student life cycle. Using student development theory, best practices, and assessment initiatives to develop, the incumbent implements and coordinates programming to support the transition and retention of Durham College (DC) students. The SSC is responsible for the effective coordination of a first-year experience course and the development and coordination of additional programs designed to engage students, support their success and development, increase retention and foster the development of transferable skills. The incumbent will develop evaluation and assessment methods to measure the effectiveness of programming.

The SSC will contribute to the ongoing development of student transition, retention and leadership programming and lead the coordination of student leadership initiatives focused on fostering student engagement, skill development, and resiliency building. The incumbent will lead the strategic coordination of leadership workshops and sessions, provide coaching appointments, and coordinate the annual Student Leadership Summit and Student Leadership Awards.

Coordination of Non-Academic Student Experience Courses

• Lead the coordination and maintenance of the first-year experience course (PREP 1000) and the development and coordination of an upper-year experience course (PREP 2000).
• Develop curriculum and learning objectives to assist students with their academic and social adjustment to college and enhance their overall student experience based on data, current research, student development theory and best practices.
• Facilitate the administration of course components into the appropriate Course Registration Number (CRN) for each new student intake.
• Liaise with campus department to ensure that information in PREP 1000 remains current.
• Identify and utilize e-learning tools to create engaging and interactive module content.
• Interact with students and monitor discussion posts, assignments, and questions via DC Connect.
• Act as the first point of contact for new students by responding to inquiries via email, Live Chat, social media, and telephone.
• In collaboration with the Student Life Coordinator, facilitate synchronous and asynchronous sessions for inclusion in both experience modules.
• Lead the coordination of all promotional materials pertaining to the student experience courses.
• Identify and coordinate formative and summative assessment strategies to measure program success and provide updates to courses based on results.
• Prepare reports on student engagement with courses.

• Develop, update, and maintain online module content within PREP 1000 and PREP 2000 using Universal Design for Learning (UDL), Electronic Data Interchange (EDI), metacognition, principles of adult learning and student development theory.

Student Leadership

• Coordinate all aspects of the Institute of Student Leadership (ISL) program, including developing an annual program plan outlining projected sessions and workshops and anticipated learning outcomes.
• Design and facilitate synchronous, asynchronous, and in-person workshops and training sessions to support program pillars.
• Develop, coordinate and implement the DC Crew student volunteer program.
• Coordinate the annual Student Leadership Summit, ISL Awards and DC Crew recognition events.
• Connect with campus partners to recruit employee and community facilitators for workshops and training sessions.
• Recruit ISL and DC Crew participants and track student progress, including logging volunteer hours, workshop attendance, and student reflections.
• Train and provide guidance and support to DC Crew volunteers.
• Conduct an annual program assessment and review, and provide recommendations to the Student Development Manager.
• Participate in communities of practice, conduct research on student development theory and experiential learning theory, and remain current on best practices in student leadership.
• Facilitate the coordination of the semi-annual student leadership awards, including the development of promotional materials, administration of applications, and scheduling of selection committee meetings.
• Use teaching technology (ex. Smartboards, iPads, digital writing tablet, laptop), apps or software (ex. Zoom, MS Teams, D2L, OneDrive) and creation software (ex. MS Office Suite, Adobe Creative Cloud) in the development of synchronous, asynchronous and in-person sessions and workshops.
• Design, deliver and evaluate training and ongoing leadership development training for student staff and volunteers throughout the year.

Student Transition and Development Coaching and Support

• Develop, coordinate and implement programming to support students through their time at DC.
• Provide timely front-line support for student issues or concerns, student involvement advising, and referral service to ensure students locate and access the resources and support they require.
• Determine the needs of students throughout the student life cycle and develop programming, including a communication strategy to provide students with just-in-time information to support student success and retention.
• Provide coaching, advocacy, information, and referral services by encouraging access, promoting persistence, increasing retention, and enhancing student academic success.
• Use coaching techniques and evidence-based strategies to support students in preparing actions for achieving their personal and leadership goals.
• Meet with students individually and in groups.
• Collaborate with internal and external services to ensure holistic student support.
• Provide guidance and referral services to students looking to get involved on campus and/or seek support from campus partners.
• Respect the confidentiality of student information (verbal and written).

Administrative

• Represent the Student Development office on committees and at campus and community events as required.
• Engage in best practice research and participation in aligned communities of practice, working groups and committees to inform program design, development and delivery.
• Maintain current knowledge of student development theory, transition issues, emerging trends and developments related to the first-year experience, student retention, engagement and leadership.
• Assist the Student Life Coordinator with Orientation activities.
• Assist the Manager with hiring, training and supervising student staff and volunteers.
• Maintain expert knowledge of the full range of college services, important dates, and campus processes.

• Perform various technical functions, including submission of events to the DC Event Calendar, editing and revising web content, creating rooms in Teams/Google Meet/etc. for departmental events.
• Promote the ISL and DC Crew programs to the college community.
• Establish and implement a communications plan to promote program participation; develop and implement tools to evaluate programs and initiatives.
• Recruit students for ISL and DC Crew programs.
• Produce monthly ISL newsletter.
• Monitor Student Development office social media accounts and ensure departmental web content is up to date.
• Maintain documentation related to portfolio and ensures that each program has an up-to-date manual (and shared files) that includes program descriptions, research, goals, descriptions of structure, organization, roles, training, activities, evaluation methods and data, and reports. This includes form development, regular meetings, and tracking and reporting, etc.
