Job Description
The Senior Scientific Software Developer is responsible for the design and development of tools for acquiring and processing seismic data using cloud and/or on-premise compute resources. In this specialist role, you will work with new and established technologies as part of an Agile group of developers. You will help in the design, development, and deployment of high availability processing systems. This position requires an individual who has strong familiarity with systems development and numerical algorithms who can work effectively as member of a team and as an individual contributor when necessary.
Primary duties will include:
Maintaining and augmenting a large codebase designed for geophysical processing and visualization of geophysical results. The existing code is mostly C++ and Java with some C# and Python.
Working with stakeholders and users to conceive of and improve features.
Providing technical support for Geophysicists.
Interacting with and understanding AWS services and libraries using AWS CLI and AWS JDK. Technologies used include S3, SQS, and EC2.
Creating feasible solutions to visualization and data management problems presented by Geophysicists.
Collaborating with domain experts to iteratively develop, deploy, and monitor usage of new functionality in an Agile environment.
Setting up and using continuous deployment and automated tests.
Supporting users as they build and deploy workflows.
Qualifications and Experience
At least 8 years of writing code related to scientific modelling or numerical analysis
At least 3 years of experience as the primary or sole developer on a product line
A university degree in Engineering, Computing, Physics, Sciences, or Applied Math
A strong mathematical background and demonstrated aptitude for developing scientific or quantitative code
Domain knowledge of geophysics
Familiarity with modern development tools and environments (e.g., Visual Studio, Eclipse, etc.)
Experience using source control tools (e.g., Git, Subversion, etc.)
Familiarity with parsing, interpreting, and designing binary file formats for data persistence
Familiarity working with database systems (experience with MongoDB or SQL Server is an asset)
Experience with object-oriented programming in large systems (100,000+ LOC)
Experience using C++ or Java standard libraries
Experience with MFC is an asset
Experience with both Windows and Linux web servers is an asset
Experience with Amazon Web Services is an asset
Experience with Linux and bash scripting is an asset
Ability to contribute in a team environment
Strong problem-solving skills
Strong communication when working with technical and non-technical personnel.
