Position title: Researcher – Health

Reports to: Business Lead or Project Manager on a project basis
Supervised by: Operations Manager or Delegate
Salary range: Competitive, commensurate with experience

Background:

The Firelight Group is an Indigenous-owned research consultancy that has provided a wide array of services to primarily Indigenous communities and organizations for over 10 years. We have a growing team of over 80 professionals, and offices in Victoria, Vancouver, and Edmonton, as well as our head office on Squamish territory in West Vancouver. The successful candidate will work alongside other professionals in a fast-paced, exciting, and professional work environment.

Job Duties:

Relationship Building

• Develop and maintain relationships with community contacts as directed/delegated by senior staff, client leads, and business leads;
• Manage clients, with mentorship;

Business Development

• Assist senior staff and client leads to scope and develop new business;
• Draft project proposals and scopes of work for review by senior personnel;

Information management

• Manage information, including field notes, audio and video files;
• Implement quality control and security of research data under the management of senior researchers;

Analysis and Technical Skills

• Conduct interviews/focus groups using consistent documentation protocols. Apply interview methodologies developed by senior staff;
• Regular reporting and documentation of results;
• Archive project-related documents and research data effectively in compliance with Firelight protocols for care and safeguarding of research data;
• Maintain technical currency within scope of practice;

Report Writing

• Write literature reviews based on academic, ethnographic, and grey literature;
• Assist with drafting and finalizing project reports, and provide support with generating maps and visual content;
• Lead Data coding and quote pulling activities, including training and assignment of junior staff;

Managing Organizational Resources

• Coordinate and lead community-based work, including supervising junior staff;
• Draft project proposals, budgets and scopes of work, manage budgets, work plans and research strategies for on-going and proposed projects following established Project Management policies;
• Manage Firelight projects with mentorship;

Travel requirement

• Travel regularly up to 10 days per month, not necessarily consecutively, in remote communities

Qualifications:

• Degree in social sciences (ideally relevant to health/social policy or Indigenous governance) – with experience in qualitative research, or commensurate experience.

Required Skills:

• Experience and knowledge of Indigenous communities. Candidates who can prove significant community experience will be preferred.
• Experience synthesizing and analyzing data using a variety of methods.
• Ability to work within a fast-paced environment that includes diverse interests, including Indigenous communities and their members.
• Strong attention to detail and highly proficient with information management systems and protocols.
• Proven ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences such as existing and potential clients, funders, directors, associates, and internal staff.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Driver’s license required.
