Hiya! We’re Radical I/O, a people-first enterprise software development consultancy and lab that develops technology with purpose. We work with cities and organizations to develop meaningful, data-driven solutions that provide people with easy access to information, when and where they need it.
THE POSITION
We’re on the lookout for an Android Engineer with experience developing in Kotlin. You will help build a mobile app UI with authentication that presents data from REST services, uses a number of mobile APIs, and is distributed to thousands of users through our municipal BC customer. While we will be hiring mobile engineers in each Android and iOS platform separately, please do highlight in your summary and resume If you are equally skilled in both platforms.
You should have end-to-end experience in building your own mobile apps and/or contributing new features to larger/enterprise mobile apps that are connected to microservices APIs. You’ve set up your own developer environments and keys, and know your way around the platform app stores and deployments. You are a technical problem-solver, but you are also skilled at building functional and delightful mobile UIs. You are comfortable working with a high-level of independence and you take initiative. You are are able to build UIs quickly with high quality, and you are comfortable asking for help when things are unclear or you are blocked. You communicate regularly by sharing updates as to your progress and in updating JIRA for tasks. You also ensure that your efforts are in sync with those being carried out by your peers working on the other platform.
TIMELINE
This project is already well in development, and we need additional help from you to build UIs per designs and also perform bug fixes based on findings from our QA Tester. You will receive support from a Senior Android Engineer as well as a Principal Engineer.
We are hiring 1 Android Engineer for a 9-10 week part-time contract to start January 30, 2023 and ending April 6, 2023, with a maximum of 20 working hours per week. You are welcome to work 5 hours/day for 4 days per week, or 4 hours/day for 5 days per week. If you are not working from BC, then we would need the bulk of your daily hours to overlap within our 9am-6pm PST team hours (you can choose which hours within those times work best for you).
You will be working remotely from within Canada (sorry, candidates physically located outside of Canada will not be considered). Therefore, you will need to provide your own comfortable workspace, development environment, and mobile phone.
We will be shortlisting candidates quickly within the next 7-10 days, with most interviews taking place around mid-January.
Our budget is within the $40/hour to $60/hour range, depending on if you would like to be paid as an employee or a self-employed or incorporated contractor, as well as the strength of the experience you bring to the table.
REQUIREMENTS
We will be using the following in our project, so please highlight any relevant experience you have in any of these:

THE OTHER STUFF
This is a remote, work-from-home opportunity. We prefer to hire folks from the west coast in general so we can communicate more in real-time. However, we will also consider other engineers from within all of Canada based on your availability, flexibility to work with some overlapping Pacific Times, and your skillset.
As this is a specific project contract time period, we generally hire self-employed or incorporated people who are comfortable with invoicing for their work. However, for those who are not yet set up in this way, and are employees or in transition perhaps looking for a more flexible role, we are also able to put the successful candidate on our payroll as a term-based employee. When applying, please select which situation applies to you (we are equally open to either situation).
(If you’ve fully read everything to this point, then feel free to note what a superstar you are in the summary of this application! We like to be as forthright and transparent as possible, so that often means these job descriptions are longer than the norm. We hope the info we’re providing is useful to you, though.)
Please note that due to our work with Canadian government (and related clients) and their data and privacy restrictions, we can only hire people who currently live in Canada and are authorized to work full-time or part-time in Canada for any employer, including engineers who are in Canada on valid working holiday visas, student visas, and post-graduate work permits.
