The Opportunity

The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is recruiting for a Student, Compliance Auditor, Emissions to join its team of professionals in the Compliance and Liability branch. In this role, you will specialize in air emissions audits within the Production & Emissions Compliance team supporting branch compliance assurance activities on industry operations. You will have an opportunity to understand challenges, change behaviours, and make a lasting impact in improving overall air quality and climate change. Also, as part of ongoing learning within the role, you will have an opportunity to improve your skills in data analysis and knowledge of a wide variety of oil and gas operations.

As a member of the team, you are responsible for conducting audits to confirm compliance with air emissions related regulatory requirements. Areas of focus include site venting limits, equipment venting limits, fugitive emissions, methane emissions data quality, and overall methane emissions reduction activities. You will also be immersed into a multi-disciplinary team which will provide exposure to varied specialties and additional assignments as appropriate.

Your Key Responsibilities:

• Conduct audits on operations within the AER’s jurisdiction which includes analyzing data, preparing audits, analyzing audit responses, and following through with the AER’s compliance assurance framework.

• Ensure all audit file documentation is compiled and saved appropriately.

• Respond to stakeholder inquiries and address issues in a timely manner.

• Seek guidance, mentoring, and training from senior staff as needed.

• Contribute to AER initiatives related to operational needs, regulatory/technical issues as needed.

Qualifications:

• Currently a student enrolled in 2nd or 3rd year of a degree or diploma in science, environment, engineering, oil and gas, or related field.

• Demonstrates strong organization skills by maintaining clear work documentation/tracking and prioritizing work based on risk and value.

• Demonstrates strong communication skills by using clear and concise language and actively listening to understand different viewpoints.

• Experience with conducting audits, oil and gas, and/or Directive 060 is an asset.

• Ability to use advanced features in MS Excel such as SQL queries and VBA macros is an asset.

Additional Requirements and Information:

• This position is a full-time summer student position which is expected to last approximately 4 months.

• Proof of enrollment in a registered institution and returning to studies following this placement will be a condition of hire.
