Main Accountabilities
• Assist with the development, implementation and maintenance of safety and health policies, programs, and procedures
• Responsible for monitoring adherence to the company safety requirements by all site personnel
• Ensure that investigations into injuries, accidents and unsafe acts and conditions are properly conducted, causal factors identified and appropriate corrective actions identified
• Conduct health and safety audits, risk assessments, reviews and inspections
• Maintain and report on safety and health records and statistics
• Conduct training and provide presentations to work crews and management on safe work practices
• Mentor site personnel by providing instruction and direction to ensure a positive and qualitative performance is achieved
• Compiling and statistically analyzing HSE data for presentation in internal and external reports and trend analysis
• Maintaining records of HSE monitoring and measurement activities
• Maintaining both electronic and hard copy filing systems and drives
• Ensuring HSE documentation (policies, programs, procedures) are periodically reviewed and updated
• Tracking and reporting on the status of investigations, corrective and preventive actions
• Maintain a master statistical database (TRIFR, LTI, etc.)
• Provide technical support and guidance in the development and maintenance of H&S programs
• Maintain an industrial hygiene program appropriate for the risks and legal requirements of the site
• Conduct safety and health related assessments including functional capacity testing, physical demand analysis, and ergonomic evaluation
• Develop and maintain an employee health and wellness program
• H&S monitoring programs, data entry and incident prevention initiatives
• Responsible for the development, implementation, maintenance auditing, and at times, training, of safety and health policies, programs, and procedures.
• Conduct field audits to determine compliance to safety programs and health and safety legislation by all site personnel
• Assist with investigations as needed and audit incident reports for completion and for quality including appropriate and effective suggestions of corrective actions.
• Conduct health and safety audits and inspections of Baffinland workplaces.
• Provide reports from audits and inspections to management and supervisors on safety infractions and recommendations on improvement or correction.
• Coach and mentor BIM employees, contractors, and management in regards to due diligence, best practices and legal compliance when it relates to change in the workplace.
• Assist supervisors, or management, with the development of quality Job Hazard Analysis’ for unusual/non-routine tasks and risk assessments.
• Contribute to the input and maintenance of the incident spreadsheet and corrective action log.
• Develop and present materials for health and safety training and monthly safety meetings.
• Support the further development of the Occupational Health and Safety Committee by providing training on health and safety, ensuring effective meetings are held by the co-chairs, and to remain as a resource for all committee members.
• Prepare documents for distribution such as the Daily Safety Memo, Bi-Weekly Safety Meeting, etc.
• Provide Standard first aid for BIM employees and Advanced Medical First Responder courses for the Mine Rescue Team.
• Participate, when required, in VIP site tours and Mine’s inspector audits.
• Act as a resource for the Mine Rescue Team in regards to pre-hospital skills development and emergency response.
• Provide direct support to the Emergency Management Team Lead, when required, during emergencies.
• Provide expertise and/or support for special projects.
• Computer and software proficiency required
• Experience in the administration and analysis of information management systems
• High level of administrative accuracy and attention to detail
• Ability to meet deadlines and manage priorities is important
• Commitment to customer service and ability to work in a team-oriented environment
• Experience in a cross-cultural work
• Excellent organizational, verbal and written communication skills are essential
• Ability to maintain confidential information
• Ability to travel to the Mine site for 3 week rotations
Main Qualifications
Diploma from a vocational institution
College Diploma Industrial Safety and Health
A Minimum of 1-3 years of Health and Safety related experience in the construction/mining industry, consulting, or government
First Aid Instructor training
train the trainer certificate
Incident investigation
Nunavut Mine Rescue training
fire extinguisher training
gas monitoring, conflict resolution
WSCC supervisor training
Access, Word, Excel, Power point proficiency and experience in Behavior Based Observation.
