Junior Accountant

Classification: Full-Time (35 hours per week) One-year, term position
Salary: $70,000-$85,000 Depending on experience and qualifications

The Tŝilhqot’in Nation is a world leader in advancing Indigenous rights and title, as demonstrated by the landmark Aboriginal Title Declaration from the Supreme Court of Canada in 2014. The Nation is currently implementing a ground-breaking tripartite framework agreement (Gwets’en Nilt’i Pathway Agreement) with the goal of transforming over the next five years the fundamental relationships between the Tŝilhqot’in Nation and the Federal and Provincial Crown governments.

The TNG is currently looking for a Junior Accountant who will be responsible for preparing financial reports, maintaining accounts payable and receiving and updating financial statements. This is full-time one-year term position, with the possibility of going full-time. This position will report to the Finance Manager.

Preference will be given to those of Aboriginal Ancestry – Section 16(1) Canadian Human Rights Act.

Key Responsibilities

• Assisting the Finance Manager in the preparation of monthly, quarterly and annual closings.
• Preparing and submitting monthly financial reports and statements.
• Updating and reviewing financial data to ensure the accuracy of the information.
• Assisting with reviewing payroll records and expenses, among other items as assigned.
• Performing reconciliations of balance sheet accounts.
• Updating accounts payable and receivable, and issuing invoices.
• Processing financial entries to ensure a proper recording of all business transactions.
• Providing support and leadership to the organization’s finance team and the community finance teams.

Preferred Requirements

• University Degree in Business, Finance, Commerce or other related equivalent area of study, with plans to work towards a CPA designation.
• Accounting system conversion experience would be an asset.
• Minimum of 1 year working experience working in accounting/finance.
• Excellent knowledge of finance including accounting principles and practices.
• Excellent communication, IT, and report writing skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of team.
• High proficiency in mathematics and the ability to think critically.
• Ability meet deadlines in a fast-paced work environment
• Superb organization skills and excellent attention to detail.
• Analytical mind with strong problem-solving and conceptual skills.
• Previous experience working with an Indigenous Government; specifically, knowledge of the Tŝilhqot’in culture would be an asset.

Familiarity with the Tŝilhqot’in, and Indigenous organizations would be an asset.

Working Conditions

• Travel may be required.
• Ability to attend and conduct presentations.
• Manual dexterity required to use desktop computer and peripherals.
• Overtime as required.
• Lifting or moving up to 15lbs may be required.
