Your Opportunity
The Ecosystems Team has an opportunity for Bird Inventory Biologist in one of our Ontario offices, with field deployment indicated as a major component of the position. The successful candidate will join our team of aquatic and terrestrial biologists who value teamwork and enjoy the company of their colleagues. This position requires field experience conducting breeding bird surveys.
Your Key Responsibilities
Primary Tasks, working under the supervision of Project Managers and Senior Biologists:
Undertake field work using Stantec’s Standard Operating Procedures and industry standard protocols, including:
Enter, compile, and analyze field data
Travel for work, including field work in remote locations, including some weekend travel
Participate in Stantec’s Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE) policies, procedures, standards and guidelines in the execution of all work

Qualifications
Your Capabilities and Credentials
The successful candidate will possess the following:
Strong interest in avian ecology
Excellent auditory and visual bird identification skills and familiarity with bird species in Ontario
Experience conducting breeding bird surveys and searching for bird nests
Experience navigating in the field using mobile electronic navigation tools and familiarity with GIS software
Strong field note and record keeping skills
Self-motivated and dependable, with a strong work ethic and interest in fieldwork
Able to work independently and in a team environment, and to adapt to a changing work schedule
Comfortable working early mornings and in physically demanding field conditions (long field days, variable weather, biting insects)
Independent problem-solving abilities
Excellent communication skills
Valid driver’s licence
The following would be considered assets:
Familiarity with bird species in Quebec and Newfoundland
Familiarity with Wildlife Acoustics Kaleidoscope software
Understanding of habitat classification systems such as the Ecological Land Classification for southern Ontario
Education and Experience
A Bachelor’s degree in Biology or technical diploma in a related field is required as a minimum
Minimum of 3-5 years of experience as an avian biologist in Ontario

This is a contract position that is expected to run from May 1 to October 6, 2023 with a possibility of extension. Compensation to be determined based on experience.
