Job Description

JOB SUMMARY

The Planning & Development Services team has a 4-month paid position available for a current student (degree/diploma in progress) or intern (recent graduate). This is an excellent opportunity for a student or recent graduate in an Urban, Rural or Environmental Planning-related field to gain valuable work experience.

The Development Planning Student/Intern will primarily assist the Development Planners in reviewing, researching, analyzing and preparing comments on development-related applications, including Niagara Escarpment Development Permits, Zoning By-law Amendments and Consents, etc. This position will provide the Student/Intern with the opportunity to assess and apply Provincial and Regional planning policies to development proposals. The Student/Intern will also assist in the development of planning documents & guidelines, carrying out research, and preparing maps, aerial photography, letters/reports and other applicable data on planning and other related matters as required. The Student/Intern will work alongside professional, technical and clerical staff to learn many different aspects of a job in the Planning field.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION

Completion of high school diploma or equivalency (i.e. GED) is required

Must meet one (1) of the following requirements:
Full-time student returning to a post-secondary school in a full time capacity, in the next available term;

Completed their academic requirements, but requires successful completion of a Co-op, Work-term or Internship, identified as a requirement for program completion by the post-secondary institution; or

Achieved program completion (degree/diploma) in a field of study related to the role within the last 18 months.

KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE

Knowledge of the Ontario planning system, including planning & environmental regulations/legislation/policies and planning tools (e.g. official plans, zoning by-laws, etc.).

Knowledge of planning practice and theory.

Previous experience in reviewing development applications or policy analysis would be an asset.

Proficient use of the Microsoft Office suite of products and video conferencing software.

Knowledge/use of GIS (e.g. ArcGIS), database management and graphics software.

SKILLS

Excellent analytical and research skills.

Highly developed communication skills, including oral, written and graphics.

Self-motivated with proven initiative, strong organizational skills, attention to detail and the ability to complete work within defined timelines.

Ability to work unsupervised, independently and as a team member.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

Must be available to work full-time starting in May 2022.

Must provide proof of enrollment/completion in a related post-secondary program/high school.

Must have access to reliable internet and be able to work remotely; accommodations may be available if required.

Access to a reliable vehicle for travel to various work locations or sites as authorized by the Corporation for business reasons, would be an asset but not required.
