Job Summary
The Centre for Student Development and Leadership (SD&L) supports the development and implementation of a comprehensive student engagement framework through programming and leadership on best and promising practices across faculties and programs for students at all levels of study, and across all faculties and programs at UBC Vancouver. This includes programming in support of the first-year experience, programming and initiatives for students in the upper years of their undergraduate degree as well as graduate students to achieve the strategic outcomes articulated in the Student Strategic Plan. The Centre supports personal and professional leadership development for students seeking to enhance the experiences of other UBC students and contribute to respectful, inclusive and accessible communities at UBC.
The Student Development and Leadership Advisor is responsible for developing and implementing effective strategies within a student experience framework to support a culture of learning, leadership, involvement, and service for all students at UBC Vancouver. The incumbent contributes to the planning, delivery and review of programs and initiatives. The incumbent works closely with Faculty partners, and is responsible for managing, coordinating, and linking various faculty plans into the student experience framework. The incumbent will manage teams of staff and student staff and will work in very close partnership with other staff and faculty, student organizations and student government (AMS/GSS), academic departments, and other Student Affairs departments to coordinate and deliver programming across the following portfolios: the Student Experience, Student Learning, Leadership Development, and Student Involvement.
The incumbent will work within a team of Student Development and Leadership Advisors and Coordinators who work in partnership with members of the campus community to contribute to positive living and learning environments at the University of British Columbia.
Organizational Status
The Advisor reports to the Director, Student Development and Leadership. The Advisor is a member of the Centre for Student Development and Leadership staff team.
The Student Development and Leadership Advisor will be expected to work in strong collaboration across the Centre for Student Development and Leadership team, to both lead and support teams of student staff and volunteers, and to work independently to complete assigned duties. This position will also be expected to help build, articulate, and implement programming that reflects the deep connections between successful orientation/transition, leadership and involvement and positive career development for students.
Collaboration with campus partners is essential to ensure students are provided with the necessary support, resources and information pertinent to their UBC student experience. This position works closely, and in cooperation, with colleagues in Student Housing and Community Services (SHCS), Admissions, and Faculties to create joint program goals and ensure that programs serve the needs of students across their various points of connection with UBC.
This position works on an annual cycle with peak periods being January – March and June -September each year. Throughout peak periods there is the possibility for additional stress and pressure when managing complex programs and ensuring they are delivered at high quality and within the required time frame.
Within this role there are also deadline pressures at the same time as demands for thoroughness and accuracy. The incumbent may be required to live in residence for the duration of the Jump Start one week immersion program and fulfill on-call responsibilities during this time. Work outside of the normal operating hours of the University will be required, including evening and weekend work. Flexibility with scheduling is necessary.
Work Performed
The Student Development and Leadership Advisor is responsible for developing and implementing effective strategies within student experience framework to support a culture of learning, leadership, involvement, and service for all students at UBC Vancouver.
The Student Development and Leadership Advisor will be contributing to and collaborating on the design, coordination, and delivery of programs and services in the areas of Student Experience, Student Learning, Leadership Development and Student Involvement that support and enhance student engagement and learning. Responsibilities include:
Consequence of Error/Judgement
Errors in judgment may cause serious results and identifiable deterioration to faculty and student relations; reduce services; cause embarrassment; increase event and program costs; and impact negatively the Center for Student Development and Leadership’s reputation and accountability with organizations, students, faculty and staff. Decisions have an impact on the development of relationships both within the university and in external communities. Decisions affect the success of these initiatives at both university and community levels.
Supervision Received
This position is supervised and works under the direction of the Director of Student Development and Leadership. The incumbent must exercise resourcefulness, initiative, and excellent decision making in the coordination and delivery of student engagement and learning programs. This position works autonomously within general guidelines towards the achievement of overall department and university goals. This includes making decisions on program development and implementation against unit goals. Work is reviewed overall, following major milestones throughout the year, for effectiveness in achieving these goals.
Supervision Given
Manages one or more Student Development and Leadership Coordinators and oversees a large student and volunteer staff team (150+) in the coordination and delivery of Student initiatives and programs. This includes responsibility for hire, discipline, training, evaluation, performance management, and termination.
Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of three to four years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working a post-secondary environment in program development, program management.
Experience coordinating complex programs including development, planning, and implementation of ideas collaboratively with stakeholder groups.
Exceptional communications skills, both verbal and written. Ability to communicate well in an intercultural environment.
Proven ability to organize events and coordinate student development programs. Ability to lead others and to function as an effective team member.
Ability to work with and support a diversity of people in a calm, respectful, and effective manner.
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a variety of different stakeholders.
A highly motivated, creative person with outstanding critical thinking.
Ability to plan ahead, anticipate problems, and meet deadlines. Ability to analyze problems, identify key information and issues, and effectively resolve.
Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
Experience in a Windows-based environment, good knowledge of Internet technologies and willingness to learn to use new systems.
Experience in university residence life or equivalent would be an asset.
Previous experience with supervision of staff and student staff (including hiring, training and performance management) would be an asset.
Knowledge of the field of leadership development, career development, student development and related literature and research an asset.
