The Aging in Place Research Cluster at the University of British Columbia Okanagan Campus (Kelowna, BC) invites applications for a Graduate Academic Assistant for an interdisciplinary qualitative research project. Using survey data this cross-Canada project is specifically focused on defining and evaluating the perspectives as voiced by Indigenous Older Adults and Elders to support their choices for aging in place. The Research Assistant will work under an integrative team of researchers led by Dr. Jennifer Jakobi (PI, Professor, Health and Exercise Sciences (HES) To support this collaborative and community engaged research project; job priorities include but are not limited to:

cleaning and data mining of multiple different datasets from various Indigenous communities data coding and conducting thorough thematic analysis summarizing textually results for presentation and potential publication assist in the design of materials to facilitate effective knowledge transfer of research to appropriate audiences and stakeholders the development of a work flow framework for future survey-based studies in other Indigenous communities

Preferred Qualifications

• Educational background in a related discipline (Population Health, Indigenous studies, Social Sciences). Undergraduate degree required. Master’s degree or currently enrolled in graduate training preferred.
• Minimum of two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Previous experience as a research assistant, particularly within a collaborative research network is an asset
• Experience with interdisciplinary, quantitative and qualitative research, particularly survey-based research and subsequent data analysis
• Experience with data and reference management software as well as analysis software relevant to quantitative and qualitative data Ie: advanced Qualtrics XM proficiency
• Experience using word processing and spreadsheet software (ex. MS Word and Excel, Teams and One Drive)
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
• Self-directed with the ability to set priorities and exercise initiative, perform critical analysis and implement problem solving strategies
• Effective organizational skills and the ability to manage projects from start to completion within strict deadlines.
• Excellent writing, editing, oral communication, and interpersonal skills; ability to present data in a clear and informative manner
• Advanced proficiency in Qualtrics XM
• Knowledge of UBC policies and procedures, including familiarity with grant funding and research ethics board requirements an asset

Job Role / Duties

• Help summarize project results, prepare progress reports and other articles and presentations
• Take the lead in validation and coding of data in accordance with research protocol, help maintain dataset for subsequent analysis.
• Contribute to the design of research protocol using sound reasoning and judgement
• Maintain accurate records of work processes and methods, safeguarding the confidentiality of information.
• Adhere to data collection procedures and documentation standards set forward by research team; subsequently review and edit data to ensure completeness and accuracy of information
• Attend project meetings and seminars as necessary
• Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as they may arise

Decision Making/Accountability: Works within well-defined guidelines and procedures, but exercises judgment in establishing priorities and carrying tasks through to completion; new or unusual problems are referred to supervisor.

Supervision Received: Works under general supervision in carrying out familiar phases of duties and responsibilities; receives instructions during orientation and on subsequent new assignments or changes in procedures.
