SBM is currently seeking one structural design intern to work with our engineering staff in the residential & small building design division of our London office for 16 months. The candidate will assist with structural analysis and design for a variety of small building types, including single-family and multi-residential dwellings projects. This candidate will work primarily in Part 9 of the building code on small buildings projects. Field work, including structural evaluation and/or construction review, may also be required.

SBM has offices in London and Kitchener, providing engineering services to a variety of private and public sector clients across Southwestern Ontario. The firm employs over 100 engineers, engineers-in-training, technologists, technicians, planners, and administrative personnel.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Become familiar with design guidelines, standards, and regulations associated with structural engineering
  • Preparation of structural engineering design and documents ensuring accuracy, adequacy, and conformance to the design requirements
  • Coordinate with other team members on various projects at the same time to achieve project milestones
  • Accept technical guidance from designers, technologists, and senior staff
  • Work within the project team environment from preliminary stages of the design through to completion
  • Coordinate structural aspects of projects with other discipline designs and drawings
  • When required, complete site investigations, general reviews of construction, and preparation of field review reports

Skills / Qualifications:

  • Completed three years towards a Bachelor’s Degree in Structural Engineering (or equivalent) from an accredited Canadian University, or equivalent, and enrolled to complete the Degree
  • Exposure to the Ontario Building Code, and other applicable Canadian Engineering standards would be considered an asset
  • Exposure to home building or renovating considered an asset
  • Strong understanding of structural analysis and design methods
  • Proficient in MS Word, Excel, and Outlook; AutoCAD suites experience considered an asset
  • Familiarity with structural analysis and design tools common to the building engineering industry
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills

  • Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and organization
  • Capable of working on several projects at the same time
  • Access to reliable transportation for travel within Ontario, primarily within London and surrounding area

Compensation:

This is a full-time temporary position with a competitive salary. SBM offers a positive working environment and a good relationship with our employees which translates directly to better customer service and a superior finished product for our clients. The successful candidate will typically work 8am-5pm Monday-Thursday and 8am-2:30pm on Fridays.
