The Simcoe County District School Board is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Attendance Counsellor for Indigenous Students Itinerant for this pilot project. Reporting to the Principal of Indigenous Education, Mental Health Lead, and the Assistant Manager of Social Work, the successful candidate will be responsible for supporting student attendance at school using a proactive advocacy and for the enforcement of compulsory school attendance as mandated by the Education Act, Section 25, and for contributing to the development and implementation of educational plans for identified and at risk students and their families.
Qualifications
University degree in Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, or a related field, or equivalent.
Lived Experience
Self-identify as First Nations, Métis and Inuit descent.
Pertinent Skills And Experience
Two (2) to (3) years related experience in children’s mental health and behaviour, preferably within an Education environment;
Ability to work as a member of a multidisciplinary team including but not limited to: school staff, colleagues, teachers, service professionals, community health and mental health resources, police and probation services – to support at risk Indigenous students and their families to re-engage at school promote student achievement;
Knowledge of community and social services agencies, their mandate, programs, and services;
Provide support and service rooted in cultural humility, anti-racism, and anti-oppressive practice;
Knowledge of legislation, codes and regulations as they pertain to compulsory school attendance, privacy and confidentiality;
Prepare and provide reports to administrator(s) which track the progress of individual students as they progress towards attendance (data collection and analysis);
Demonstrated leadership, interpersonal and organizational skills;
Strong mediation, problem solving and conflict resolution skills;
Ability to prioritize and work independently or in teams as required;
Excellent oral and written communication skills;
Computer literacy and ability to work with a variety of software programs, e.g., MS Word, MS Excel and MS Outlook, and G Suite applications;
Member of the Ontario Association for Attendance and Counselling Services (OACAS) an asset;
Reliable transportation required;
The nature of this position will require travel from a habitual location (to be determined); mileage reimbursement at the Board approved rate;
Fluency in Anishinaabemowin or Michif is an asset.
Testing May Be Required During The Selection Process.
The normal work period for this position is the school year – ten (10) months and ten (10) days. The compensation range for this position is $ 61,344 $76,676 per year, depending on qualifications and experience. Assigned area(s) may be subject to change in the future. This is a unionized position and union dues are applicable.
