Position Overview:
The Itinerant Teacher is responsible for providing both direct instruction in areas of the Expanded Core Curriculum, and consultation in support of children and youth who are Deaf or hard of hearing. This individual works collaboratively as a part of the educational team and/or early learning team. This position reports to the APSEA Provincial Supervisor of Programs for Students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing.
Qualifications and Experience You Bring:
– Master’s degree in education of Students who are Deaf or hard of hearing, or equivalent
– Valid Nova Scotia Teacher Certificate
– Competency to teach the Expanded Core Curriculum for students who are Deaf or hard of hearing
– Experience working with students who are Deaf or hard of hearing, including those with multiple exceptionalities
– Experience and training in early childhood education is an asset
– Experience with assessment, program planning and delivery of instruction for students who are Deaf or hard of hearing
– Ability to assess and provide programs to address the diverse learning styles of students
– Experience teaching in a variety of settings (e.g., school, home, early learning centres, community)
– Experience working in a virtual learning environment
– Ability to communicate effectively in ASL
– Demonstrated competency in assistive technology for students who are Deaf or hard of hearing
– Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and relate positively to children, families, early learning staff, APSEA staff, administrators, educational team members and community partners
– Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
– Excellent organizational/time management skills
– Demonstrated self-initiative and ability to work with limited supervision
– Demonstrated confidentiality and professionalism with regard to access and distribution of student information.
– Culturally responsive with the ability to apply knowledge, experience and commitment in the areas of cross-cultural understanding, human rights and diversity
– Strong commitment to professional growth and learning to remain current in the field.
– French language skills an asset
– Regular travel: access to a reliable mode of transportation; may require overnight stays
