Job Description
The Customer Access Studies team is responsible for the delivery and the transmission planning for connection projects to provide system access to Market Participants connecting to the Alberta Interconnected Electric System (AIES). We are looking for an engineer to prepare engineering assessments, documentation and technical regulatory support to facilitate System Access Service Requests. This role includes creating and working with a variety of technical documents such as study scopes, engineering study reports and reviewing external consultant engineering assessments. You will collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, and also providing guidance and support to other engineers and Engineers-In-Training.
In this role, you’ll develop technical experience with:
Reviewing, commenting and accepting Distribution Deficiency Reports submitted by Distribution Facility Owners
Preparing Engineer Study Scope Documents in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders
Conducting power flow, stability and short circuit studies, an advanced power system analysis studies for system planning, connection and system operations purposes
Determining alternative solutions for connecting Market Participants to Alberta’s transmission network and justify the selection of preferred alternatives based on technical, economic and impact factors
Preparing and reviewing Technical Studies base case models in PSS/E software
You’ll also have opportunities to collaborate and work cross-functionally with other AESO teams:
Analyzing system constraint and partnering with Operations, Markets and Engineering groups to determine Remedial Action Schemes or Mitigation Plans
Supporting AESO Forecasting by examining load and generation forecasts
Coordinating with Senior Economic Analysis to prepare economic analysis and review results
Contribute to AESO’s Long Term Plan with the System Planning team
This role also interfaces with external stakeholders, preparing information for, and participating in stakeholder meetings.

You bring some combination of:
Two to five years of engineering experience in the electric utility industry with some exposure to power systems and distribution planning or operations
A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering with a focus on Electrical Engineering
Eligibility to be registered as a Professional Engineer
Proficiency in PSS/E software
