Research Associate at Agricultural Communications & Epidemiological Research (ACER) Consulting

ACER is a growing consulting firm, based in Guelph, Ontario that is looking for a motivated and team-oriented professional to join our team.
About the position:
The position of Research Associate is available immediately, on a one-year (12 month) full-time contract basis. An option to extend the position(s) will be reviewed towards the end of the contract, and will be based on performance and opportunity.
Our ideal candidate has a blend of mixed methods research skills and a passion for scientific communication. We need you to be able to investigate a problem using sound approaches and effectively distill the results into plain language for our target audiences.
Remuneration will be competitive, offered on a salary basis, and commensurate with qualifications and experience. The successful candidate will also have access to necessary online programs and tools, equipment, and a healthcare spending account.
Our office is located at 100 Stone Road West, Guelph, Ontario. Our team offers a hybrid workplace model. The successful candidate will be expected to work roughly 3 days in the office in an average week, providing some flexibility in hours worked from the office and at home. Periodic travel may also be required.

Agricultural Communications and Epidemiological Research (ACER) Consulting specializes in animal health research and scientific education. Understand. Inform. Influence. This is our goal. We design, implement, and evaluate tools and programs to help our clients understand, inform, and influence population health and welfare. We have a passion for agriculture and believe health and disease are best studied through a “One Health” lens. We work with provincial, national, and international clients in the private, government, and non-profit sectors on a variety of exciting projects ranging from researching best on-farm practices, to designing national quality assurance programs, to informing policies and regulatory decisions, to building educational resources and toolkits. Our focus is livestock health and welfare, but we also undertake projects spanning human, animal, and environmental health.
Our unique offerings span from research and analysis, where we conduct field trials, national surveys, and statistical analyses, to scientific communication, where we develop animated and live-action videos, fact sheets, podcasts, and educational toolkits, to training and evaluation, where we design online training courses and facilitate multi-stakeholder events. Our projects and clients are diverse, which means we must be understanding, adaptable, creative, and responsive.
What you will be working on:
As Research Associate with ACER, your key responsibilities will include:
● Using mixed-methods (e.g., background literature reviews, environmental scans, scoping reviews, surveys, stakeholder interviews) to investigate a variety of practices, programs, and policies related to the health and welfare of animals and the people who care for them
● Supporting the design, delivery, and facilitation of surveys, interviews, focus groups, workshops, and events
● Synthesizing the results from research and other technical documents
● Writing technical and plain language reports that clearly and succinctly summarize the results of our work
● Supporting the development of educational resources, including fact sheets, infographics, animated and live-action videos, webinars, podcasts, for a variety of audiences
● Meeting with clients to understand their needs, provide progress updates, and present findings
The skills we’re looking for:
● The ideal candidate has a MSc degree in epidemiology, animal welfare, health sciences, rural studies, capacity development and extension, or a related field
● Previous experience working in and/or strong understanding of agriculture required
● 2+ years’ experience involved in quantitative and qualitative research
● Experience in Knowledge Translation and Transfer/knowledge mobilization/extension; preferably in an agricultural context
● Exceptional written and oral communication skills; from technical to plain language
● Curious, collaborative, entrepreneurial, and self-motivated
● Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team and be comfortable engaging with a broad range of clients (from farmers to executives)
● Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
● Ability to take initiative on project tasks
● Willingness to learn and apply skills to a broad range of challenges
● Expertise and experience in facilitation, coaching, teaching, and/or public speaking an asset
