About the Department
The AMD IP Systems Engineering Team is a cutting-edge hardware-based lab-oriented team engaged on an array of leading technologies found in today’s leading Accelerated Processing Units (APUs) and discrete Graphic Processing Units (dGPUs). Among these technologies are PCI Express (PCIe) and AMD’s proprietary High Speed Interconnect Interfaces. These interfaces are industry leading for high-speed graphics and system interconnects. With AMD now shipping and continuing development of its latest generation designs, the IP Systems Engineering role provides an exciting opportunity to be part of tomorrow’s leading technologies – today!
If you are an outstanding individual who wants to make the MOST of your work experience, we are in a unique position to provide an experience that will supply you with what YOU need to succeed in the future: a combination of a) valuable technical skills, and b) development of effective collaborative, organizational, and communication skills that are vital in today’s engineering roles.
As part of the Systems Engineering team, you will be integrated as a FULLY contributing member of the team, with similar responsibilities to the other full-time staff on the team. In most cases, by the end of your work term, you will likely surprise some of your peers when you remind them you are a student returning to school!
The Role
The IP Systems Engineering team has three main functions:
- Planning. Prior to the next revision/design of silicon, the IP Systems Engineering team engages with cross-functional teams in hardware (design, architecture) and software (drivers, SBIOS/VBIOS, diagnostics, tools) to establish, document, and review the deliverables/requirements for the next bring-up/validation efforts.
- Bring-up. With every arrival of prototype silicon, the team is working in the lab and executing silicon unit level test coverage and validation targeting low-level silicon functionality using a variety of hardware and software-based tools.
- Debug. No product is born perfect, and when problems arise, the IP Systems Engineering team is the leading team of experts to provide deep, technical debug analysis and solutions to PCIe problems found in either silicon bringup or by other teams. Extensive usage of specialized lab hardware (protocol and logic analyzers, high-speed scopes), software tools to control design parameters, and understanding of technical specifications are acquired by engineers engaged in these debug efforts. System Engineers drive resolution of these issues across multiple hardware and software teams and develop strong relationships with engineers across multiple facets of the organization.
What you’ll be doing
Responsibilities include:
- Low-level testing of ASIC hardware features using diagnostics, software tools, protocol/logic analyzers, and oscilloscopes.
- Debug of features that are not working properly, including running experiments, engaging with more senior engineers and/or designers, as well as coordinating testing efforts with other teams (validation/qualification, software, production, etc.).
- Suggesting and driving delivery of additional tools and/or processes that could improve team efficiency via mechanisms like automation or reduction of redundancies.
- Engagement in system-level debug/triage efforts.
- Documentation, including status reports and generation of test plans for future silicon revisions/projects.
What you’ll learn
- Details of the technical implementation of an industry-leading, high-speed communication protocol/interconnect.
- How to solve complex communication issues on this interface using a combination of data communications theory, application of engineering principles, interpretation of technical specifications and design implementation details, and experimental techniques.
- How to effectively engage with other technical staff to drive towards resolution on common issues, including strong development of interpersonal skills that will serve as a strong baseline for your future career.
Requirements
- 3+ years of computer/electrical engineering education.
- Understanding and handling of basic lab hardware (scopes, multimeters, etc.).
- Knowledge of fundamentals of logic design (eg. FSM, gates, registers, flops, timing, HDL).
- Experience in data communications theories and application.
- Fluent with PC’s (building a PC from individual components, installing OS/drivers, basic network configuration, etc.).
- Excellent communication skills – written and verbal.
- Programming in common scripting languages and/or experience with linux/unix an asset.
- Knowledge is high speed protocols such as PCIe/USB an asset.
- An eagerness to learn!
