The Extension and Support Services Branch is one of three branches under the Agriculture Resource Division of the BC Ministry of Agriculture and Food. The Branch identifies and promotes agriculture and food production/processing systems that are sustainable and enhance the economic benefits to the province. It maintains operations in all agriculture regions of the province to deliver Ministry programs and services. The Branch works through a variety of strategic partnerships and is the primary point of contact for the Ministry’s agriculture clients, including businesses, associations and local governments.

This position is part of the Land Use and Geospatial Unit which includes land use planning, geospatial (GIS) services, traceability programming, livestock premises identification, agricultural land use inventory (ALUI), and emergency response. ALUI provides the current and accurate land cover and land use information that is a prerequisite for responsible and effective management of BC’s agricultural land.

The Geomatics Coordinator provides leadership and expertise to the provision of GIS services to the branch and larger ministry. This position leads and coordinates the development and application of advanced custom tools and processes to efficiently collect, compile, maintain, display, and distribute spatial and attribute inventory data. This position collaborates with a diverse team of agrologists, engineers, land use planners, and technical staff to maximize the potential of GIS to address a variety of information needs.

Job Requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree in geomatics, GIS, data science, or computer science; OR
• An undergraduate degree in a *related field AND a technical masters, diploma, or certificate in geomatics or GIS. *Related field includes geography, environmental studies, resource management, agriculture, forestry, land use planning, land and food systems.
• An equivalent combination of education, training and *related professional experience may be considered. Note:*Related professional experience does not include academic course work.
  • Related experience must include a minimum of 3 years combined in all of the following: developing and managing spatial databases, data specifications, and data standards.
  • developing methodologies and performing custom and complex geospatial analysis.
  • developing custom scripts and/or models to automate data management and processing tasks.
  • delivering technical products in support of client business needs.
  • using ESRI’s software suite including ArcGIS Online, Field Maps, ArcMap, ArcPro.
• Preference may be given to applicants with at least one (1) year professional experience:
  • leading geo-spatial projects including the assignment of work.
  • applying data model schemas, operational data editing workflows, and quality control procedures for agricultural land use inventory datasets.

Willingness Statements

• Willing to conduct field data collection which may include travel by vehicle with overnight or extended stay in government approved accommodations.
• Willing and able to complete training required to maintain currency in technical skills and abilities.

• Must possess and maintain a Valid Class 5 BC Drivers Licence or equivalent.

This position is located in Abbotsford. Although this position has onsite office requirements, we offer flexible work arrangements, including the opportunity to volunteer to telework part-time (with conditions) as set out in applicable employer policies.
