Job Summary

The Safety Manager (or Safety Leader) at Caliber Projects Ltd. is a full-time position overseeing all of Caliber’s construction sites. The position is best suited for someone who thoroughly understands safe job practises and safe work procedures in the multi-family residential construction sector, is a hands-on type person with excellent character, has excellent communication and leadership skills and has the ability to work in a multi-disciplined team environment. The Safety Manager reports to the Director of Construction and is responsible for leading all of our teams to a safety first culture where we truly care about the physical and mental health of all workers in accordance with Caliber Projects Occupational Health and Safety Program.

Job Responsibilities:

• Provide oversight, implementation and leadership to Caliber Projects Occupational Health and Safety Program.
• Understand and ensure adherence to all required safety policies as directed by Caliber’s Health & Safety Program and WorkSafeBC Occupational Health & Safety (OH&S) Regulations.
• Ensure that the Caliber Projects Occupational Health and Safety Manual is adhered to and implemented and maintained.
• Perform formal inspections of all work areas with site specific Safety Officers to ensure complete compliance with Caliber Safety Program
• Support site teams with the identification of hazards and implementation of risk mitigation controls.
• Ensure that Caliber Training Matrix is updated and that all employee training and certifications are current and saved in their specific employee files. Ensure that all COR certification paperwork is filed and updated and that COR is maintained year-over-year
• Attend weekly site visits and complete inspections of the site and ensure documentation compliance with the Superintendents and Safety Officers
• Liaise with the Director of Construction and General Superintendent related to safety concerns with Caliber Employees
• Provide leadership and support to team of safety officers in regard to their personal career growth and education plans.
• Provide input to our overall strategic safety planning with respect to growth of the company.
• Provide to Director of Construction yearly budget for company health and safety
• Ensure PROCORE is used effectively across all Caliber’s Projects, and that all Safety Officers are trained in its functionality
• Chair the Joint Health & Safety Committee and be responsible for liaising between worker and employer reps
• Equip the Safety Officers with any equipment they need, and ensure they keep their work areas clean, tidy and professional
• Be involved in all incident investigations taking place on Caliber Jobsites
• Set an exceptional safety example

2. Site Safety

• Create relationships with WorkSafeBC, BCCSA, and other safety associations/governing bodies
• Set an exceptional safety example

3. Personal Development

• Liaise with General Superintendent on a regular basis to ensure all team members maintain a safety first approach to construction work
• Maintain a thorough understanding of the issues facing the construction site throughout the progression of the site.
• Maintain a network of Site Safety Officers
• Stay abreast of OH&S advancements or crucial information in the construction industry.
• Partake in continuing education to constantly grow ability and knowledge of site safety construction practices and procedures.
• Continue to hone verbal and written communication and leadership skills

4. Interactions

• Report to Directors of Construction and Director of Pre-construction as called upon.
• Key internal interactions: Implementation of Caliber OH&S Manual on site.
• Key External interactions: Subcontractors, General Public, WorkSafeBC, BCCSA

5. Authority:

The Safety Manager has the authority to stop work if the Caliber Projects Occupational Health and Safety Program is not being adhered to

6. Required Education, Qualifications, Skills, and Experience:

• A minimum of 10 years’ construction experience or large scope oversight
• A minimum of 5 years of management / oversight experience
• A level Three First-Aid Qualification (minimum)
• CSO Designation
• Proficient with computers and the use of Microsoft Products and Procore
• Strong organizational and time management skills with discipline and diligence.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Safety, or a related field of study is preferred.
• Knowledge of construction safety, current Federal and OSHA requirements
• Certification as a Safety Professional or Emergency Medical Technician is preferred.
• Strong work ethic – Willing to do what it takes to get the job done.
• Ability to freely access all points of a construction site in wide-ranging climates and environment.
