Canadian Association of University Teachers Looking for Education Officer at Ottawa, Ontario, Canada Full Time

Reporting to the Director of Political Action and Communications, and under the coordination of the Senior Organizing and Education Officer, this position is responsible for managing CAUT’s education program, including developing, coordinating, and implementing innovative programs to enhance member capacity and close skills gaps. The incumbent has demonstrated expertise in adult education design and deployment and a familiarity with emerging educational and instructional technologies.

Duties And Responsibilities

• Works in consultation with the Senior Organizing and Education Officer to execute the operational priorities and work plans for all education initiatives in support of CAUT’s vision and objectives.
• Contributes to and implements a strategic education plan to build and strengthen member skills for effective collective action within CAUT member associations.
• Identifies the training needs of members and ensures CAUT has the capacity to meet these needs.
• Maintains a curriculum of education and training resources and goals.
• Creates, develops, presents, and writes adult participatory education materials and events using current teaching and learning best practices.
• Assists with the organization of conferences, workshops, and other training events.
• Coordinates the member facilitator/train-the-trainer program to identify and train a diverse pool of member volunteers, support member facilitators’ development, and gives feedback when needed.
• Recruits and retains volunteers to train within member associations via train-the-trainer programs.
• Monitors emerging education delivery technology and tools to identify opportunities to deliver more effective education offerings.
• Revises and expands existing CAUT education material and workshops, in coordination with relevant colleagues.
• Manages the Learning Management System (LMS).
• Designs and facilitates the evaluation of learning experiences.
• Liaise with external partners (e.g., Canadian Labour Congress, United Association for Labor Education etc.) on cross-organization and cross-movement learning initiatives.
• Brings ideas, energy, and knowledge of education best practices to ensure continuous improvements.
• Adopts new tools and systems as relevant to the role.
• Adheres to established processes and quality control systems for education workflow and recommends enhancements to improve quality or efficiency.
• Participates in Political Action and Communications team and Organizing and Education team activities including operational planning, adoption of cross-functional initiatives, and regular team meetings to ensure alignment on goals, progress against priorities, and two-way communication.
• Other related duties as assigned by CAUT management.

Qualifications

Education & Experience:

• Completion of post-secondary education in adult education, instructional design, or relevant field.
• A minimum of 5 years of professional experience in a similar capacity.
• Significant experience developing and coordinating both in-person and online course offerings, including asynchronous and synchronous components.
• Significant experience in adult education and popular education, including developing participatory materials and coordinating meetings and educational events.
• Demonstrated experience developing and delivering participatory, adult curriculum and assessments.
• Considerable experience in developing education strategies, projects, and plans. Experience working with CRM and/or Member Database Management, websites, and online registration systems.
• Professional experience in an association, trade union, and/or not-for-profit organization preferred.

Language Requirements

• Ability to work in both official languages at an advanced level is required; consideration may be given to candidates with advanced English and intermediate French in the absence of fully qualified bilingual candidates.

• Knowledge of the labour movement, trade union practices and organization, principles of labour, member engagement, organizing, and the current social, political, and economic issues that affect CAUT members.
• Excellent knowledge of adult learning principles and popular education.
• Effective communication skills with the ability to communicate clearly verbally and in writing to a range of audiences.
• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build appropriate and constructive relationships with internal and external contacts, founded on credibility and trust.
• Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively and with tact as part of a team.
• Ability to work independently in consultation with the Senior Officer while exhibiting a high degree of initiative and sound judgment.
• Demonstrated planning, time management, and project-management skills to effectively balance competing requirements and multiple priorities and deadlines with minimal supervision.
• Strong research, analysis, and critical thinking capabilities.
• High degree of professional ethics and integrity.
• Understanding of and commitment to CAUT’s policies, practices and procedures and alignment with CAUT’s values and objectives, including social justice, equity, and human rights.

Location and Hours of Work:

This position is based in Ottawa and is not a fully remote position. The candidate must reside within or be willing to relocate within regular commuting distance of Ottawa.

The position normally works 35 hours per week (Monday to Friday); overtime may occasionally be required.

Compensation

This position has been classified as Category 4 in the Collective Agreement between CAUT and COPE Local 225. The current hire rate for this category as of July 1, 2023, is $121,323.00.
