Position Overview:
The City of Kitchener offers the following day camps at our aquatic facilities:
Kiwanis Park: Kiwanis Classic Camp for ages 7-12 years. This camp provides children with the opportunity to actively participate in outdoor activities, crafts as well as pool activities.
Grand River Recreation Complex (Lyle Hallman Pool): Kids Crafts and Games for children aged 4 (as of Dec. 31, 2022) – 6 years old and Active Kids for children aged 7-10 years old. Each camp provides children with the opportunity to participate in indoor and outdoor activities related to the topic of the camp, as well as pool activities.
Breithaupt Centre: Kids Crafts and Games for children aged 4 (as of Dec. 31, 2022) – 6 years old and Active Kids for children aged 7-10 years old. Each camp provides children with the opportunity to participate in indoor and outdoor activities related to the topic of the camp, as well as pool activities.
Our Assistant Camp Coordinators are experienced, often former camp team members, with a basic understanding of child development and early learning. They take on a leadership role in program planning, oversee the day-to-day camp operations and actively engage in programming, role-modelling great leadership and mentoring young staff to ensure we provide a positive and impactful program that is inclusive, diverse and fun for all.

Employment Dates: May 29-August 25, 2023
Hours per week: 35
Hours of work: 7 hours/day, hours vary
Participation in evening and weekend Leader training June 13, 14 and 17 is required
Not required to work on July 3rd and August 7th
Work will include working in a variety of outdoor conditions, office work and active play.
Work is performed in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its regulations to mitigate risk to self and others.
The selection of staff is based on a combination of application, resume review, interview.

Responsibilities:
- Assists with the planning, organizing, and implementation of camp programs for children.
- Acts as on-site contact to camp staff and ensures the delivery of safe, quality, and age appropriate programs in accordance with City guidelines.
- Potentially administers the daily camp lunch program. Collects cash payments.
- Ensures the safety and enjoyment of participants through communication, monitoring, and enforcement of program and facility rules, and addresses unsafe and unacceptable behavior; refers to supervisor as appropriate.
- Assists with the integration of volunteers, inclusion staff, and private inclusion support workers.
- Takes action to deal with incidents, problems and emergencies and parent concerns according to policies and procedures; refers to supervisor as appropriate.
- Communicates with participants and parents regarding camp activities/programs and participants behaviour.
- Assists participants with personal care (e.g., toileting, changing) as required.
- Provides first aid as required.
- Acts as back-up to Camp Leader as required.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Requirements:
- Must be reliable with a good attitude and employment record.
- Minimum grade 12 diploma preferred.
- Applicants must be a minimum of 18 years of age or over as of the first day of employment, unless otherwise specified.
- Employment is conditional upon the provision of current certification in Standard First-aid (CPR, Level C). Any related costs are the sole responsibility of the applicant. Please connect with us if this is a barrier to employment.
- Employment is conditional upon the provision of a satisfactory Police Reference Check – Vulnerable Sector (issued after March 10, 2023). Any related costs are the sole responsibility of the applicant.
- Employment is conditional upon; attendance at all training sessions, submission of required documentation/certification, adherence to the minimum age requirements and ability to meet the employment term.
- Current Standard First Aid and CPR Level C certification required.
- Satisfactory Police Reference Check – Vulnerable Sector (issued after March 10th, 2023)
- Access to reliable personal transportation to work is required
- A minimum of two seasons with camp or related children’s programming experience preferred.
- Must have the ability to participate in the pool programming in the water
