Since 1883, Toronto Public Health (TPH) has been protecting and promoting the health and well-being of all residents across the City of Toronto. With this goal in mind, TPH works to prevent the spread of disease, promote healthy living and advocate for conditions that improve health for our diverse and growing population of 3 million. Reporting to the Board of Health, it also monitors the health status of Torontonians to better respond to ongoing and emerging health needs, and develops and implements public policy and practices that enhance the health of individuals, communities and the entire city.
As Toronto Public Health’s Supervisor of Media Services , you’ll demonstrate your ability to lead and motivate high-performing teams as you supervise the TPH Media Relations team. The team is responsible for the coordination of proactive and reactive media engagement, liaising with staff from across the division to coordinate day-to-day media relations; providing strategic media advice and support to all levels of public health staff; and developing and identifying proactive media opportunities to communicate information about Toronto Public Health programs and services.
A persuasive, confident public speaker, you’ll report to the Director of Communications and support the Communications Leadership Team. You will prepare media responses to requests, flagging any potential media issues, and deal with the media on behalf of TPH to make sure reporters’ queries are answered as quickly as possible, messages on the issue(s) at hand are consistent, and the public is well informed on TPH programs and policies. In addition, you’ll be expected to prepare key messages and author media releases on public health issues and programs, and advise senior staff on how to deliver key messages or respond to media enquiries.
This position encompasses the usual leadership accountabilities, as you’ll be supervising the day-to-day media relations operation of all assigned staff – scheduling, assigning and reviewing work, monitoring and evaluating performance, providing motivation, ensuring effective teamwork, and high standards of work quality and organizational performance, and promoting continuous learning and innovation. Providing input into, and administering, the assigned budget, and ensuring that expenditures are controlled and maintained within approved budget limitations will also be an integral part of your job.
Your strengths as a leader are complemented by superior oral and written communication skills, high emotional intelligence , strategic planning, problem-solving and negotiation – enabling you to deal confidently and effectively at all levels of the organization and with the media.

Given the nature of this mandate and the environment in which we operate, you will also be available and prepared to work after hours and provide on-call support, as needed.
Key Qualifications:
Extensive experience in developing, implementing and coordinating diverse, high level media relations and issues management strategies, in a time-sensitive environment with high profile issues.
Post-graduate diploma or degree in communications or media relations, or a combination of education and relevant experience.
Experience in dealing with senior management and political staff on sensitive or confidential issues.
Supervisory experience in the media field combined with a strong ability in supervising, leading, developing, motivating and training a team to produce innovative material and strategies.
