Job Profile

The Light Duty Mechanic works under the general supervision of the Foreman/Lead Mechanic and performs a variety of duties related to the servicing, repairing, overhauling, rebuilding, testing, inspecting, and preventative maintenance on a wide variety of vehicles under 8900 kgs GVW and medium duty off-road equipment. Tests equipment, components and materials of completed repairs to approve or reject and take appropriate action and document test results. Operates various types of mechanical and welding equipment, hand tools, and facility equipment as may be required in the course of carrying out daily tasks, the incumbent submits various reports and records through the shop fleet maintenance software system, as well as practices and ensures that the safety procedures are followed in the execution of their assigned duties.

As The Light Duty Mechanic, You Will

• Perform repairs and preventative maintenance tasks such as brakes, steering components, suspension components, air conditioning, oil changes, lubrication, adjustments, tire repairs, etc. on all types of vehicles under 8900 kgs GVW and medium duty off-road equipment.
• Perform diagnosis by testing, operating, or inspection; and ensures that the problem diagnosed is correct.
• Disassemble, assemble, and prepare tasks which includes selection of methods, tools, equipment and materials; and performs necessary repairs on all types of vehicles under 8900 Kgs GVW, and up to medium duty off-road equipment and component parts.
• Test equipment, components, and materials of completed repairs to approve or reject and take appropriate action and document test results.
• Operate various types of mechanical and welding equipment, hand tools, and facility equipment as may be required.
• Respond to emergent situations, customer service requests, and complaints.
• Operate, clean, and maintain various types of vehicles under 8900 kgs and up to medium duty sized off-road equipment.
• Write and maintain reports and records through fleet software system.
• Assist with training of new employees, by example.
• Keep abreast with current automotive technologies and repair procedures.
• Maintain cooperative working relations.
• In the course of daily tasks, ensure the practice of established safety rules and regulations for the protection of self, fellow employees, the public, property and/or equipment operated by being continuously aware of existing and new safety procedures and concerns of the Department and the Fleet Safety Committee.
• Work overtime, various shifts, and in various repair facilities as required.
• Perform other duties consistent with the classification as assigned.

Your Education And Qualifications Include

• A Red Seal Journeyman Certificate with Interprovincial Status as an Automotive Service Technician.
• A valid Manitoba Vehicle Inspection Certificate is an asset.
• Approximately five (5) years of experience (current and directly related) repairing automotive vehicles.
• Experience performing preventative maintenance, diagnosis, inspection, overhaul, repair, rebuild, modification, installation, and testing of automotive vehicles equipment.
• Experience in vehicles and equipment air conditioning along with a valid MOPIA certification.
• Ability to work independently with minimum supervision or direction.
• Effective communication skills with the ability to communicate both verbally and in writing.
• Excellent customer service skills with the ability to interact and provide effective service to staff members, members of other City Departments, and the public.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and work in a team setting.
• Experience in basic Arc and Acetylene welding would be an asset.
• Knowledge of safety procedures for automotive mechanic repair shops; with the ability to learn the department specific safety programs, and Workplace Health and Safety regulations.
• Proficient at sourcing and retrieving maintenance information electronically and online.

Conditions Of Employment

• The successful applicant must maintain legal eligibility to work in Canada. If the successful applicant possesses a work permit, it is their responsibility to ensure the permit remains valid.
• Must have a valid Manitoba Class 5 Driver’s License.
• Possess and maintain a Red Seal Journeyman Certificate with Interprovincial Status as an Automotive Service Technician.
• A Police Information Check satisfactory to the employer will be required from the successful candidate(s), at their own expense.
• Must be physically capable of performing the duties of this position, including, but not limited to: considerable standing, bending, crawling, lifting, climbing, pulling and reaching, and heavy lifting up to 100lbs.
• Must provide own hand tools consistent with trade requirements.

Position Reports To: Supervisor of Major Repair Facility

• The successful applicant may be required to work rotating shifts, be reassigned within various facilities, and/or work to overtime during peak periods.
• As a Light Duty Mechanic, in December of each year, the successful candidate will be eligible for a tool allowance in accordance with the CUPE collective agreement.
