About FJYB Canada Inc.

We are “Friends of Jamaica Youth Baseball” a non-profit dedicated to providing gently used baseball and softball equipment and funding to youth leagues and organizations in Jamaica to support the development of those sports there through local partners.

Jamaica has the largest English-speaking population in the Caribbean islands, it is a country full of talented young athletes. The country gave the world Usain Bolt, Marlene Ottey, Patrick Ewing and many others. But with no baseball infrastructure, just a handful of baseball professionals can call Jamaica home. But we feel that it has so much to offer the sport of baseball and Jamaicans could easily excel at it if given the chance.

In 2023, we partnered with Jamaica Little League Baseball and Softball Inc. (JLBBS), a Jamaican-registered charity, to deliver a first shipment of donated youth baseball and softball equipment. Because many of their participants are underprivileged, the cost of buying baseball equipment is steep as there are no local stores that supply it, and everything must be ordered in.

We plan to continue to partner with JLBBS to further develop their work to bring baseball and softball to boys and girls in Jamaica, both in exporting equipment donations, and in offering funding to their projects, such as sending teams to regional tournaments.

About the Role

We are seeking a passionate individual to join our dynamic team as a member of the Board of Directors. This exciting opportunity could see the right person help our organization grow and blossom from the ground up. You will attend virtual and in-person quarterly board meetings, participate in one more more committees, and help grow and direct the organization as it develops.

Position Expectations

• Commit to a minimum two-year term
• Uphold the bylaws of the organization, help draft and approve a Code of Conduct, and help ensure compliance with the applicable legislation
• Attend quarterly and other meetings of the Board and committees on a virtual and/or in-person basis
• Engage in and support our fundraising activities and donation initiatives to support the financial stability and growth of our organization and meet our mission goals
• Represent FJYB Canada at public community events and to the media, occasionally outside normal business hours, both here in Canada and in Jamaica
• Willingness to travel as necessary
• Provide advice within your areas of expertise (legal, financial, communications, etc) to support the Board of Directors and the organization

Qualifications

• Must be at least 18 years old
• Must not be in bankrupt or legal incompetency status
• Possess skills or experience in a board of directors role in an area such as marketing, fundraising, cross-border exports, finance, legal, or human resources
• Available 3-6 hours per month and able to attend quarterly Board meetings either in-person or via telecommunications
• Must undergo a vulnerable sector check and provide verification of experience and any qualifications possessed
• Ability to travel internationally and possess a valid passport (Asset qualification)
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and videoconferencing technology
• Preferred: At least one year of experience on a not-for-profit board of directors
