The Fort McKay First Nation (FMFN) is composed of over 800 band members, including those of Cree and Dene heritage, with approximately 400 members residing in the hamlet of Fort McKay — a community located approximately 65 km north of Fort McMurray. ABOUT THE NEW SCHOOL – Opening Fall of 2022 – Come Join the Team!
The Fort McKay First Nation is nearing completion of its Brand-New K-9 school located in the community of Fort McKay. The Elsie Fabian School will be opening its doors September of 2022 and we are looking for dynamic and passionate Educators who love Northern Living to join the team! The school will incorporate both the Dene and Cree Language, culture, and Land-Based Education where students will learn about their rich local history. Fort McKay is looking for talented educators who practice and believe that the well-being of the child is at the center of everything; this is the shared practice and belief of the Fort McKay elders, parents and community members.

ABOUT THE ROLE
We are seeking a passionate Physical Education Teacher who is looking for an enriching experience to be part of the new school team. The Physical Education Teacher will be responsible for leading the instruction and providing quality teaching to the students. They will provide ongoing analysis and pedagogical knowledge and make decisions that support optimum learning for all students in Health and Physical Education. This is a full-time position reporting directly to the Principal of Elsie Fabian School.
KEY RESPONSIBITIES
Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Ensure the physical education curriculum promotes a physically active lifestyle and develops cooperation, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
Provide ample opportunity for students to engage in regular physical activity that promotes healthy growth and development.
Teach students about sports, physical development, health and proper nutrition.
Organize activities and curriculum including the preparation and maintenance of gym equipment.
Teach across a range of grade levels, in addition to supporting our Athletics program by coaching at least one team per term.
Participate in planning and organization of special events such as Sports Day, Terry Fox Run, Jump Rope for Heart, play days, etc.
Provide a strong Cree Language, Dene Language, Land-Based Learning and Academic Program with a focus on literacy and numeracy.
Create, review and revise unit planners, in collaboration with departmental colleagues.
Develop a classroom environment that builds positive relationships and fosters an ethic of care.
Identify and select instructional resources and methods to meet students’ varying needs.
Design and implement a range of authentic formative and summative assessments, providing appropriate and timely feedback to students.
Participate in faculty and parent meetings and special events.
Model respectful and timely communication with students, colleagues and parents.
Attend professional development workshops as required by the school.
Apply the Alberta Teaching Quality Standards.
Other duties as assigned.
KEY REQUIREMENTS
Possess a Bachelor of Education – Major in Physical Education/Exercise Science/Kinesiology
Holds a valid Alberta Teacher’s Certificate
Knowledge of teaching Physical Education to K to 9 students
Experience working in a First Nations community including knowledge of First Nations culture, traditions and values is a definite asset
Ability to speak, read and write Cree and/or Dene considered an asset
Clean Criminal Record Check with vulnerable sector required
Valid class 5 Driver’s License & Clean Driver’s Abstract required
