In this exciting new opportunity you will own the scientific and academic strategy, the tactical planning, and operational governance between GM and the Canadian academic ecosystem. The role requires identification of strategic needs and focus areas, developing a portfolio of high impact roadmaps and collaborations, and providing a conduit for the recruitment of highly qualified and diverse personnel.
The Manager will consider every element and workstream of the broad Canadian Technical Centre, and continually propose strategic and harmonious collaborations with academia and scientific partners. Elements in scope are broad, and range from computer science, artificial intelligence, and sophisticated simulation methods to autonomous driving, systems safety and material science.
Emphasis will be placed on GM’s purpose statement, 0/0/0, technology insertion and business value. You will use the dynamic and evolving government research programs to secure funding for collaboration projects. Cumulative travel requirements of 2 to 4 weeks a year are typical, primarily across Canada and other locations in the US.
Core Responsibilities
Responsible for GM’s growth through industry-academic partnerships and collaborations.
Facilitate GM and university co-innovation and commercialization by developing value networks, partnerships, a continuous pipeline of highly qualified personnel, and innovation opportunities.
Responsible for the CTC Academic Strategy which identifies, screens, and catalogues university research across a broad spectrum of research fields that can elevate all horizons of innovation at GM.
Deliver clear and concise executive pitch criteria for candidate academic collaboration opportunities.
Define methods, systems, and tools for facilitating GM’s academic collaboration at all stages of business development from idea inception to business modelling, customer empathy, business viability, technical feasibility, opportunity prioritization, and iterative validation.
Develop metrics and dashboards to objectively measure success and findings for university collaboration projects as they are paused, adjusted, or persevered.
Support all aspects of GM’s technology research and business development as it relates to academic collaborations.
Responsible for all elements of the Scientific Research and Engineering Development submissions for the Canadian Technical Centre.
Assist in developing strategic programs with various funding partners to establish a continuous pipeline of industry-academic innovation, commercialization and potential licensing opportunities.
Cultivate a diverse and inclusive open innovation culture where academic partners are welcome to play an effective role in GM’s innovation vision and growth strategy.
Prolifically communicate GM’s vision, academic strategy, DE&I and STEM programs both internally and externally
Assist in developing GM technology and capability roadmaps that are inclusive of academic ecosystem.
Additional Job Description
Required Skills and Experience
Master of Engineering Degree or Master of Science Degree
Experience with talent development (mentorship, career development, progression/ succession planning, etc.)
Excellent knowledge of the GM Global Vehicle Development Process and Vehicle Performance and Integration processes
Excellent communication skills for both internal and external audiences
Solid understanding of R&D processes and external research processes
Track record of technical creativity and development of intellectual property
Critical thinking in developing Centres of Expertise and Technology Roadmaps
Proven high level of analytical ability to resolve sophisticated problems
Demonstrated proficiency and coaching of Design for Six Sigma principles
Strong communication, interpersonal skills, and the ability to work effectively with multi-functional team, multiple SMTs and many team members local and remote
Proven ability to innovate, think strategically, and initiate action in support of positive change

Preferred Skills and Experience
PhD of Engineering, Science, Computer Science, Software, Mechatronics, Aerospace or Systems Engineering
Experiences with customer centric design, Design Thinking and agile methodologies or scaled agile frameworks.
Previous experience working with highly focused technical teams
Ability to work with communications, product planning, and technology planning teams
Knowledge of Systems Engineering principles and methodologies
Knowledge of data analytics, advanced diagnostics and prognostics
Knowledge of ADAS or autonomous driving technologies
Knowledge of Innovation Theory, processes and methods
Knowledge of mechatronic systems, light-weighting materials, and efficient design
