As the responsible stewards of public funds, the Department of Finance partners to ensure value for money in the delivery of programs and services for Yukoners. The Department of Finance serves as the territory’s statistical body and develops the territorial budget, corresponding supplementary budgets and Public Accounts for the territory. It is also responsible for negotiating, coordinating, and representing the Yukon on inter-governmental financial matters with other jurisdictions. In its capacity as a central agency, the department provides corporate financial leadership and advice to departments across the organization.

The opportunity…

Reporting to the Deputy Minister of the Department of Finance, the Comptroller is a strategic senior leadership position with central agency management oversight of the Yukon Government’s execution of accounting practices. The Comptroller establishes a foundation for a fiscally responsible government and maintains a strong, sustainable financial position in collaboration and partnership with senior management and leaders across Yukon government.

The office provides central agency services to ensure the proper implementation of all financial policies and controls for the Government of Yukon and monitors the compliance of financial management and accounting activities with relevant legislation and Public Sector Accounting Standards. The Comptroller prepares the Public Accounts, including providing corporate accounting services and coordinating the audit activities of the Office of the Auditor General of Canada.

• Completion of undergraduate degree, preferably in accounting, economics, commerce, public or business administration
• Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation in good standing
• Experience in executive or senior management roles involving planning and reporting, or leading audits in a large organization, preferably in a government setting
• Considerable and recent, experience working with external auditors and providing leadership during the audit process
• Experience overseeing human and financial resources
• Experience providing analysis and recommendations to decision makers

Candidates may also be assessed on the following job specific requirements:

• In depth knowledge of Public Sector Accounting Standards as well as a general knowledge of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS)

• Ability to build strong working relationships and foster a cooperative work environment
• Ability to deliver when faced with tight deadlines in a complex organizational setting
• Accomplished in written and oral communications

Additional Information

Conditions of employment: Security clearance, CPA designation in good standing

Job requirements: Travel outside of the territory approximately twice per year.
