Hamilton Regional Indian Centre Looking for Mental Health Peer Coordinator at Hamilton, ON Full Time

The Mental Health Peer Coordinator (MHPC) position is intended to facilitate the development of networks of peers with lived experience with the justice system and with mental health and/or addictions concerns, who can work together in achieving a Good Mind. The MHPC serves urban Indigenous community members under community supervision orders and builds effective partnerships with mainstream community agencies, advocating broadly wherever necessary to improve both health and justice-system outcomes. The MHPC will also assist in supporting the Aboriginal Healing and Wellness program

The MHPC will be responsible to follow the policies and procedures as determined by the Board of Directors and under the direct daily supervision of the Executive Director or designate.

Qualifications:

• Post-secondary education in Indigenous studies, social service work, child and youth work or a combination of equivalent and relevant education; skills and abilities as determined by the employer;
• Minimum two (2) years of demonstrated and related work experience within a mental health and/or social service setting;
• Demonstrated and related work experience within a not for profit and/or Indigenous organization or community;
• Strong knowledge and awareness of Indigenous culture and history, with particular emphasis on the impacts of trauma, family violence, Indigenous youth engagement and community outreach;
• Experience completing intakes, assessments, action plans, referral services, and aftercare supports;
• Ability to facilitate sharing and healing circles that include teachings and discussions;
• Ability to work in collaboration with justice system officials, Native Inmate Liaison Officers, Aboriginal Liaison Officers, and parole and probation officers;
• Skilled in networking and partnering with other Friendship Centre programs, Indigenous and mainstream organizations related to mental health, addictions, housing, and employment matters;
• Knowledge of community support services both Indigenous and mainstream;
• Strong communication, listening and interview skills, as well as critical thinking and problem-solving capabilities;
• Proficiency in MS Office applications and Database applications- statistical and narrative reporting;
• Must have excellent written, verbal, time management and organizational skills;
• First Aid/CPR certification or be willing to be certified;
• Must be available to work some evenings and weekends; and,
• Ability to obtain a satisfactory CPIC- Vulnerable Sector Search within 30 days of employment start date as a condition of the employment offer.

HRIC is a highly flexible organization offering additional compensation including 5 paid cultural days, 4 paid holidays beyond mandatory Employment Standards, paid shutdown over the Christmas holiday week, and health benefits. HRIC health benefits are offered to full time permanent employees, employees will be able to enroll upon the successful completion of their (3) three-month probationary period.
