General Accountabilities:
Report to Special Studies Manager, System Planning Development. Carry out technical impact assessments and other specialized studies to determine transmission and distribution customer/system needs; Carry out analysis of problems and the development of strategies, alternatives and preferred solution; and deliver solutions through suppliers and service providers. Develop, define and prepare methods related to the management of transmission/distribution assets.
Specific Accountabilities:
Build and maintain short-circuit basecases for required timeframes, incorporating all necessary elements of the Ontario Power Grid, including lines, transformers, Tx and Dx connected generation.
Maintain liaisons with counterparts in neighboring jurisdictions as needed to exchange needed system equivalents in support of building and maintaining Short circuit basecase(s).
Build and deliver Short circuit basecases to internal business units and external organizations in accordance with Special Studies’ commitments.
Conduct short-circuit studies as required in support of internal business units as well as in response to external requests.
Conduct annual breaker surveys, requiring comparison of expected short-circuit levels with known interrupting ratings and capabilities for HV breakers throughout the system. Identify problems, development of strategies, alternatives and preferred solutions for locations where fault levels pose a concern with respect to breaker interrupting capabilities.
Conduct engineering reliability studies in support of Planning and other business units (BU) in system development and equipment sustainment investment strategies.
Conduct studies and support HONI efforts related to Geomagnetic Disturbance (GMD) compliance, preparedness and monitoring, specifically in alignment with NERC planning standard TPL 007-1 and its emerging revisions.
Conduct power quality investigations and assist in managing the power quality related projects.
Conduct trend analysis on archived lightning data in supporting investment strategies for transmission line lightning performance.
Carry out conventional and non-conventional engineering studies in a number of subject areas such as:
Electromagnetic transient studies (EMTP, EMTP-RV, PSCAD)
Investigation of equipment failure
Overvoltage simulation and assessment, including lightning and switching transients, resonance, etc.
Induction coordination studies
Power quality and the impact of non-conventional generation on the operation of the power system.
Analyze problems, development of strategies, alternatives and preferred solutions.
Prepare comprehensive reports and specifications and present solutions, producing necessary documentation, as necessary.
Maintain an awareness of advancing technology developments in business/transmission/distribution equipment and systems.
Work with Service Providers and other HON business units to perform required works, and performance initiatives.
Act as a team leader and co-coordinator for assigned projects. Be responsible for organizing, scheduling, coordinating and assigning work with instructions, for providing advice and direction, for quality, accuracy and productivity of assigned project members.
Participate as a representative of the Company, in endeavors to advance the corporate interests. Liaise with other internal work groups, divisions and outside interests.
Assist supervisor in identifying resource needs and develop/mentor new staff.
Perform other duties as required
