Indigenous Student Success and Retention Advisor
Reporting into the Manager, Indigenous Student Services, the Indigenous Student Success and Retention Advisor (SSRA) must have a wide range of knowledge regarding the college’s academic and service options and then exercise these options on a student-by-student basis, as required to facilitate student success. The SSRA must be able to respond to, investigate and problem solve a diverse number of escalated inquiries from students, staff, faculty, other departments and the general public which requires a wide range of knowledge related to college programs, service departments and academic policies and procedures.
The SSRA plays a key role in retention and transition strategies for Indigenous students.They are responsible for identifying barriers to student’s transition, retention, and success, offering resolutions to overcome these barriers.The SSRA develops and implements outreach and at-risk strategies for students in cooperation with faculty, and their counterpart in other schools and service areas of the college that will enhance students’ transition, success and retention initiatives on their educational journey.The SSRA will support Indigenous access and transition programming including incoming Pathfinder students, Homeward Bound students, and Indigenous students within other access and transition programming. When involved in college wide initiatives, the SSRA acts as a voice for Indigenous students and their Indigenous program (s). The transition continuum will include pathway transition to the workforce, and at times the continuation of post-secondary.
The SSRA works with prospective Indigenous students, parents, local First Nation communities and Indigenous organizations to encourage participation in post-secondary. Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with Indigenous elementary and secondary school Boards and counsellors to facilitate PSE access and effective transitioning to college where appropriate.
