North York Community House (NYCH) is a dynamic community agency that has been working with residents of under-resourced and low-income neighbourhoods in northwest Toronto for over 30 years. Position Summary
Our Director of People and Culture has primary responsibility for NYCH’s human resources, anti-racism/anti-oppression work, and volunteer program. This position is a key member of our senior team, collaborating on strategic planning, organizational development and building leadership capacity within NYCH.

Main responsibilities
Human Resources and Culture
Sets a tone of respect, equity, accessibility; contributes to a positive workplace culture through a collaborative and supportive workstyle
Oversees, and leads review and revision of all key aspects of the HR cycle, and seeks ways to engage management and staff in improving the way we do HR
Encourages teams to embrace technology/platforms to save time and create space for innovation, health and wellness, and other initiatives
Leads review and revision of NYCH’s compensation and job development structures
Develops progressive recruitment practices, including creation and promotion of job postings, applicant screening, interviews tools, and onboarding
Leads development and revision of HR policies and procedures; ensures compliance with relevant legislation including the Ontario Employment Standards Act, Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, and Ontario Health and Safety Act
Provides coaching, support and direction to directors and managers around HR issues
Coaches, supports and supervises HR Coordinator and Volunteer Coordinator
Manages internal complaints and performance management issues, including problem solving and coaching with management, and guiding disciplinary action
Supports/advises risk management and joint health and safety committees
Plans and leads training for managers and staff around HR issues, policies, and anti-oppression
Anti-Racism/Anti-Oppression/Equity
Drives organization-wide capacity building around anti-racism/anti-oppression (ARAO) and equity by:
Ensures internal ARAO initiatives are connected, integrated and further developed as part of ongoing ARAO implementation plan
Supports ARAO Advisory Committee and acting as a lead/liaison with senior team around recommendations, complaints, feedback, progress updates, etc.
Works with ED, senior and management teams to achieve deliverables in ARAO implementation plan
Procures consultants and other resources to support ARAO/equity work
Leads evaluation of ARAO/equity work, reporting back on findings, and identifying areas for further development
Strategic/Organizational Development
As senior team member, contributes to development, revision and implementation of strategic plan and theory of change
Contributes to organizational development and design, and change management planning and implementation
Plays key role in review and revision of organizational values
Co-chairs board-staff Risk Management Committee; ensures information regarding risk management issues, strategies and requirements flows between committee and senior/management
Volunteer Program Management
Works with Volunteer Coordinator to develop/revise volunteer policies and procedures
Supports development of new volunteer opportunities and positions in line with changing demand
Works with Volunteer Coordinator to develop mid-/long-term plan for the volunteer program
Qualifications

Financial management – monitor aspects of budgets, identify staffing needs, act as signing officer
Education
The minimum level of education for this role is a bachelor’s degree in human resources, social services, nonprofit management or related field. Additional training in anti-oppression/equity, and/or CHRP certification an asset.
Experience
A minimum of 5 years’ senior management experience working in nonprofit/community services, including:
At least 5 years’ experience in a senior human resources capacity, overseeing all aspects of the HR cycle
Demonstrated experience leading anti-racism/anti-oppression/equity initiatives
Experience as member of senior teams
Supervision and leadership of middle management-level employees
Developing policies and procedures
Developing and managing programs and multi-funder budgets
Working with funders, partners and other stakeholders
Overseeing development and implementation of HRIS, evaluation plans, data collection systems and analysis/reporting processes
Additional Requirements
Proof of a valid police reference check is required for employment at NYCH, as well as an annual declaration.
Candidates will be asked to declare their vaccination status during recruitment process. Successful candidates will be required to provide proof before or directly upon the start of their employment
Working Conditions
Typical work hours are from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday to Friday, with somewhat regular requirement to work additional hours, occasionally in the evening or on weekends. Combination of remote and on-site work, and occasionally required to travel within North York/northwest Toronto (when in-person meetings are safe and permitted).
